Joint savings, separate checking (in same bank but online you can't see the others statement/balance). We let each other know what we buy, and unless its more than a few hundred buy first let other know after, no permission required. I like it because we share savings which we both contribute to monthly, but still have our "own" money as well.

I have a joint account. It kind of makes things easier. We make our financial decisions together.
But it can suck sometimes. My wife will ***** if I spend 13 bucks at Chipotle if I get pop and chops and guac. And raises/promotions don't seem as exciting since I can't spend the money however I want. And it's hard to surprise her with big gifts.
But overall it's working out. No prenup because we earn close to equal and :teamwork:

DINK. Married 10 years, together for 20. We have a joint account that we each deposit into each month and pay the bills out of, and our own personal accounts that we deposit our paychecks into. This works well for us because of many of the reasons already mentioned.

We would go nuts if we had to have a discussion about every cent we spend. We review our spending budget about once a year to make sure we're depositing enough into the joint account; we also meet with our financial planner yearly to discuss retirement, etc.

This...

My wife and I have separate accounts for small stuff, but most of the money goes into a joint account...

Unless you have a prenup, it really doesn't matter if your accounts are separate or not, unless they are set up correctly from the get go...bigger issues exist if you have to worry about having money in separate accounts IMHO...

The point of having separate accounts has nothing to do with worrying about a divorce or lack of prenup. If it does, as you say, you have separate issues.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter, and won't matter for that matter.

We both deposit our checks in to the same checking account where all of the bills, monthly expenses and large purchases that are discussed are payed from. We each get an "allowance" that we deposit in to our separate accounts for spending on "wants" like video games for me or shoes for her...

This seems to work out well for us but we both make about the same and are both financially responsible.
