Default light in instrument cluster won't turn off

hello everyone! i'm the new proud owner of a 2002 laguna seca blue m3. purchased her yesterday, and already very happy with my decision.

I have two questions for you guys/gals:

1) the light around the clock in the instrument cluster won't turn off after i remove the key from the car. noticed it last night when i parked the car, and thought it might just be normal. when i started the car this morning, the battery was almost dead. is there something i need to do to turn this off? (couldn't find anything after i searched the threads about this specific issue, so sorry ahead of time if it's out there somewhere).

2) the A and the S mode seem to be backwards. if i'm in A mode (i purchased an SMG) then i have to manually change gears, and vica versa. anyway to swap that around? doesn't seem to effect anything. the car otherwise is perfect! (didn't search the forums for this issue, so again sorry if it is posted elsewhere).

thank you ahead of time, and glad to be on the forums!

-dj

ok, so found a link to someone else asking the same question about the backwards smg thing. makes sense now:

Ignore the letter at the far right. It says what you would be in IF you pushed the knob to the right. Put it out of your mind... Just pay attention to the current gear display (the big #) on the left. If there is a D to the lower right of that, you are in auto, if its blank, you are in manual. It's Item #4 in the diagram on page 67 of the manual... Ignore item #3. If you get confused, just pull a paddle, it'll put you in Manual mode.

but help with question 1 would be greatful! thanks again!

Strange. The clock will stay on after you turn off your car for a few minutes.. as there is still current running in the car and then should shut off. You shouldn't have to set anything for this to happen.

Someone I knew had a similar problem. Its a electrical malfuction. His interior lights, clock light, etc stayed on after he turned off the car and locked it. It took 3 or 4 trips to the dealer to find out what was wrong. Luckily he had warranty. Good luck.

Just in case anyone else runs into this issue down the road....

My problem turned out to be an old battery. The original owner never drove the car, so it had the original battery in it. I replaced it (wow, that was kinda expensive) , and now life is good (clock / gear indicator lights turn off after a few seconds of having the key out of the ignition.)

i drive my car daily, and was wondering what it could be.. i did stand next to it, and it would blink every now and then, about 5 minute intervals. any info or experience besides an old battery or would it just be that? thanks in advance...

I got the answer for #2, You see an A on the SMG knob display on your dash when you are in manual mode, it means if you push the knob to the right, where the A is, you will go into auto mode. I had that mixed up the first week of ownership of my car
