Default Re: E46 M3 vs M4...driving feel?

We acquired our M4 (individual signal green) last year, and kept our other M cars. The e46 is the one I keep coming back to. Donít get me wrong, I love all of them. I especially love the power, tech, and everything else the M4 has to offer. Not to mention the neck breaking color we got lol.

But honestly, the e46 M3 is the best. Even ours which is probably the roughest car in our fleet, is by far the most different, and visceral experience.

Have any of the E46 M3 drivers here tried out a M4? I'm hoping to keep my M3 for as long as possible since I just flat out love driving it (and it's not terrible to work on), but I do want to have options in the back of my head just in case. I'm not a fan of turbochargers, and would prefer a MT so that does enter into it. Ideally it would be a convertible or (moving beyond BMW) targa and DIY friendly. Some potential contenders:

M4
E92/E93 M3

far less likely:
C8 corvette (blasphemy, I know)
Jaguar F-type of some sort

Almost certainly not, but can't get the thought out of my head:
vintage Gen2 MR2 (had one for years and loved it)
Try one of these. 2015 MY. My guess is that the driving experience would be close to the best youíve experienced.

I sure hope pricing stays steady on those for a few more years until I can get my hands on one.

Maybe its age, expectations, or anti-turbo-ism...

When I first drove an E46 and E92 M3, I WANTED IT! Had to have it. Even riding as a passgener...I said "WOW, this is a GREAT car!"

The F8X is superior in terms of performance, daily drivevability, tech and every other measureable thing. I'm not running out to buy one.

First, I don't like how the hood bump looks. Make it angular/aggressive or more subtle. As an M3 owner, its the second thing that catches my eye and it looks meh. Otherwise, I do like how the F80 looks. Not as much of a fan of the F82. Like the hood bump...too much of a mix of aggressive and classy smooth looks.

Then you get in one and I don't feel excited. I don't like the sound...especially since I drive an E90 M3. The E46 M3 isn't the greatest sounding car but at lease that has the hope of some awesome induction noise from a CSL airbox.

I might get an F80 used as a DD but more than any other chassis, an M3 isn't THAT much better than the non-M counter part. And then I might be getting old and more sensible.

Really? The F80 isn’t that much better than the F30? I truly mean no offense, as i see you have 328i, but in all sincerity the F30 might be the worst non-SAV BMW I’ve ever driven

So you first got in an e92 m3 as a passenger and immediately fell in love? That interior is camry like, and the sound is so muted from inside stock.

F80 actually has an interior that looks great. Feels special inside. The car feels so much more solid than a non M. I’m curious how long you’ve had the F80 to make that assessment..
