Default Sluggish Performance at low rpm

Hey guys,

I want to ask forums before paying someone $125 to diagnose this issue. First off, I have no CEL. Therefore, I'm kind of clueless on where to start diagnosing on my own.

Anyways, car has a shake at start up idle however it idles at normal rpm. The rpm doesn't have unusually movements, and it stays steady at around 1k during a cold startup. I've noticed the car being more sluggish (low on power) at lower rpm, and then once I pass 3k rpm, I feel most of the power back. This occurs at all times especially at full throttle. MPG is down a lot around 15-16mpg. Car stalls, here and there when coming to a stop. Like it will dip to 500 rpm and sometimes it will bounce back to normal idle or stall.

Let me know your thoughts guys I would greatly appreciate the help.

Try to go to autozone or another place and scan for codes (they do it for free). Even without cel there can be codes.

It could be a myriad of things - going fuel pump, bad maf, vanos, bad o2 sensor, etc.

See what the codes say and that could guide you.

Report back here with results.

Do you have an aftermarket intake? Sounds like a dirty MAF combined with a missing MAF screen

Sluggish performance at low rpm - sounds like you've got yourself an M3!

No but what the others said; sounds like it could be VANOS related (whole bunch of sensors that could affect that), or ignition, fueling, airflow reading etc

I do have one, It's a gruppe M intake. I have an extra new MAF sensor on my other e46 m3 at my house, and will swap it. My other m3 was throwing MAF codes, so I added a new one.

Thanks again guys, I will keep you posted on this issue. I will let you know if it may be ignition coils. I'm hoping its something small like that. None of the ignition coils have been replaced, but my spark plugs were replaced at 87k miles.

My Vanos was well overdue for an overhaul (I was down a good amount of power...will have before and after dynos soon.) and NEVER threw a Vanos code.
