Default Z4 M Roadster - buying one with vanos issues

I am considering buying a 2006 Z4 M. The previous owner just finished a fairly major repair that included replacing the vanos and also the exhaust sprocket. Is this a red flag? Or is it a good thing that the vanos has been dealt with already? I know itís a somewhat common issue in these cars.

Thanks!

Sounds like a plus to me. I would just find out if it was replaced with stock or aftermarket. Might sound weird but aftermarket for vanos parts is better than stock. Look up beisan and you can see how they pretty much have an upgraded part for most bmw vanos parts. Especially the S54.

Make sure you see documentation on claimed major repairs.

If they didnt replace, youd have to. As long as you can get a clear picture of what was done during the procedure, it sounds like its probably a win.

This is the parts and service notes from the invoice. Looks like quite a lot of work was done. My guess is oem parts but it was at an independent garage that specializes in euro cars.

Looks like they just replaced the entire VANOS unit. Nice, but not bulletproof. Might fail again. Still better than unknown unit.

where in the receipts do you see that the vanos unit is replaced? I see gasket, but not the unit.

On the parts list the second item is a vanos. It was a couple thousand for that line item. On the notes page under replace gasket they talk about replacing the vanos and exhaust sprocket once they got in there because the broken exhaust sprocket pin had started wearing the vanos.

"Fairly major repair"...why/how did it fail that it required everything to be replaced? I've seen these fail where chain tensioner busts, chain skipping on sprocket, hub teeth breaking, etc.

Great that it's all being repaired, but again, why? I'd ask for a compression or a leak down test.
