I probably would have opted to use a different independent shop that he wasn't as familiar with to ensure there were no biases in play.

I think the seller even agreeing to have the car flatbedded away for a PPI is a sign that he's a decent seller. Do you get a decent read from the character of the individual?

I think the "don't do at dealer" reasoning is two-fold:

1. Don't have it done at the dealer the seller goes to for service, since they might have relationship.

2. A dealer will know you won't be doing the service with them, so no financial incentive to find anything.

Of course there are exceptions but good to be a little cynical. Some independent shop with good rep who knows BMWs is better bet.

But if you go to a place that worked on the car they should "know" the car.

I've never understood that view.

Its not as if it rolls in and they say "Its Bob's E46 M3. We saw it a year ago and know the car well. Its a good car".

I agree, but consumers, no matter the product, will always hope for and assume the best. Makes us feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. Well, not you and me so much, but you know..

Maybe not at a dealership, but at a smaller indy where 3 guys who love these cars run the shop and work on them. It's a relationship you build . Not everyone gets to that point and doesn't apply in every situation.
