I probably would have opted to use a different independent shop that he wasn't as familiar with to ensure there were no biases in play.
I think the seller even agreeing to have the car flatbedded away for a PPI is a sign that he's a decent seller. Do you get a decent read from the character of the individual?

I think the "don't do at dealer" reasoning is two-fold:
1. Don't have it done at the dealer the seller goes to for service, since they might have relationship. 2. A dealer will know you won't be doing the service with them, so no financial incentive to find anything. Of course there are exceptions but good to be a little cynical. Some independent shop with good rep who knows BMWs is better bet.
