The DSC warning light was on and it had a dealer inspection that said the timing chain tensioner was starting to leak. ó-He took it back in to be repaired and they figured out the leak was at the vanos not the timing chain tensioner. They opened it up to replace the vanos gasket and found the exhaust sprocket pin broken and damage to the vanos. Decided to replace both.

Iím not convinced that was all truly needed but thatís what they did anyways.

Someone paid for a lot of unnecessary repairs, while not managing to address the failure modes going forward. :P

Yes a lot! Thatís why Iím trying to figure out if there are red flags or anything I should watch for if I buy this car.

The price of the car should end up fairly in line with market. No big premium or discount.

Dealerships will not rebuild/ bulletproof the Vanos. If something is wrong, they replace the whole unit. It's definitely not a bad thing

I would say it's a plus that you've got a Vanos that's much newer, but you should still plan on doing the Beisan procedures.

Funny, I recently picked up an M roadster that came with a $5k vanos repair bill where the whole unit was replaced with no upgrades to prevent the failure from (re)occurring. This is from a well known and popular shop mind you.

I will be going back in to install all the Beisan parts.

I see that you didn't buy the car in question. I've been watching it online but since I don't live in the area, I was wondering if you could share why you didn't buy it (or if you're waiting to buy it), in case there are any obvious issues with it that other buyers should know of.

Did it appear mechanically and structurally sound or did you decide to not even look at it? My dad and brother are in Edmonton so they can look it over but if you've already done it and had serious reservations, it'd be very helpful to save them a trip (and/or me a flight)....

Thanks!
