There are 2 BMWs not sold in the US that I would buy in a heartbeat if they came here.
- 2012 BMW 320d ED (F30) - 4cyl 4 valve 2 liter turbo DIESEL - 163 hp - 280 lb.ft - 0-60 = 8.0 sec - 55 mpg city/80 mpg hwy They also sell an amazing X5 - 2012 BMW X5 M50d (e70) - 6 cyl 24valve 3.0l turbo DIESEL - 381 hp - 530 lb-ft - 0-60 = 5.4 sec - 32 mpg city/41 mpg hwy The new M3 Diesel would look like this: - 3.5 tri-turbo 6cyl - 450hp - 500tq - 0-60 = 3.9 - 35 MPG And the US diesel fear ends here.... Audi did a great job, no question about that, but lets get real, the FIA/ACO wrote the rules for a diesel to win, period. The French got excited and jumped the diesel rules to try and get Peugeot into a LeMans win. When Porsche closed the gap, beating the LMP1 Audi with the LMP2 Spyder in the ALMS, and with Roger Penske chomping at the bit to take a full Porshe/Penske assault to LeMans, the French, and FIA/ACO changed the rules on the LMP2 cars restricting their fuel again. In 2011 the FIA/ACO wrote Porsche and Acura/Honda out of the LMP2 class. The Audi and Peugeot enjoy literally twice the engine size, twice the boost, it’s called “rule making engineering” at its best (hey, that’s NASCAR!). On a level playing field, a gasoline engine, of the same displacement, and or boost, will destroy a diesel on a racetrack, period.

What is it ... something like 10 yrs to 80??? The reason those rules were "adjusted" was to PROMOTE manufacturers to abandon the inefficient gas-powered engines and begin focus on a much more efficient technology = DIESEL.... and just like this thread --- this was met with much opposition, ignorance and general dis-information. |
