I lift just very slightly before I down shift... I find that it makes for a smoother downshift...
Jab at the throttle
If its your first time doing this I'd do it in an open area because if you time it wrong it'll be bad

I am pretty sure I am doing in correctly then. In order to jab at the throttle you need to lift a little bit anyways. I do get a "bark" and the revs to blip and go up so I am pretty sure I am doing it right. I just think our explanations are a bit different lol.

I found I was in the wrong gear heading down the long straight, and I simply downshifted by flipping the left paddle without lifting. The instructor was quite stern: "Don't ever downshift with your foot on the throttle."

It got me to thinking. I would also think that the McLaren is even more sophesticated than the M3 and the software would take care of the car. But, maybe I'm wrong.
This does not apply to the M3 at all.

SMGII doesn't rev-match for ****.

You have to blip the throttle for aggressive downshifts. When down shifting, I'll keep my foot where it is just for a moment during the shift then blip it. No actual lifting goes on.

You can do this with standard hee-toe but I'd recommend you practice left foot braking if you can

When cruising around town you'll lift plenty for upshifts to keep the car nice and smooth, but still never downshifts.

There's no lifting involved
Think of it like this
While the gear indicator blinks the clutch is in and you have the opportunity to hit the gas to the floor if you'd like..which sometimes on a 3-2 downshift I do

Fair enough. But earlier you said that lifting before you downshift puts excessive wear on the tranny... How is that true?

Place a cup of water to the rim and downshift + lift..that water will spill
Let's make a scenario
Cruising 3rd gear 4000rpm
Drivetrain rotating at 10,000rpm
***** throws a big glup at your car
Downshift to 2nd
1. Lift-engine slightly revs and then uses the drivetrain to finish off the downshift..you hear engine brake(again you lifted)
2. Constant throttle-pretty smooth/perfect
3. Rev match - you're going uphill and the car really doesnt know what to do/not accurate/you want to accelerate immediately after downshift

You'll spill the cup in 1 but not 2 or 3..
You don't notice the jerk because you're driving
Next time look at your passenger I guess..
There's a lot of technique in smg most people don't know..
1. Jab throttle then feather for a smooth start
2. Shift, Release gas, wait for rpms to drop, hit the gas before the clutch catches for a rev matched up shift (that bark lambos/Ferrari f1 trans make when wot redline shifts occur)
3. The downshift..
4. I think I got up to a 4k launch without launch control..I won't get this on film..but I believe it was close to 4k
5. The smg shifts faster in sport I feel because of the throttle position, it thinks it's about to go faster than it is, making the car much smoother, that "too sensitive" crap..put your left foot on the foot rest and put your weight on that foot..problem solved

Heck I can make my trans rev match an upshift 5 times in a row

To be honest I don't know if this is good for the car
I have 9x,xxx miles on my smg and the clutch is definitely slipping
Could be my clutch I don't know..
I'll make a video when I can afford a camera on all the things I just mentioned
It's pretty cool once you see it..
