I say bullshit. It took me less than that to dismount the same stuff and take a zillion pics for the DIY.

This is a job that can be done all by yourself. 'Timing the engine' is a job anyone could do

We typically charge work time for everything we do. Granted our Master Tech has a lot of experience and often moves faster than book time. But that price seems really high.

That being said, we've done at least 30 seperate cam gear bolt upgrades all at $450-$650 with parts and most also received a valve adjustment.

$450 is what we charge for just cam gear bolt replacement for those that DIY their valve adjustments. This includes the labor and new bolts.

And betting your hourly rate for non-fixed price jobs is maybe a bit higher than $85/hour with you being on the left coast, can you give the OP the hours you figure in?

That is right, we are at $115/hr and that is on the lower side here in the Bay Area. The entire job to replace the bolts at our shop can take up to 6 hours.

Update:

The shop said that they could do 6 bolts instead of 12 for cheaper. They also said that they would they would drop the $170 diagnosis fee and do a valve adjustment for that cost.

Do both sides really need to be done? I've only heard about bolts breaking on the intake side.

Yikes, that's quite a high quote.

I do this a lot for the Socal guys. A loooot faster and a loooot cheaper

You only need to do the bolts on the intake side.

^^^ Listen to this guy! Kaiv knows his stuff

OP, you are getting ripped off in Seattle. I would just follow instructions of a DIY and just take care of it yourself...

Or even get a group of forum members together on a Sat. and tackle the job...

The problem with your shop is that they are saying your bolts are "broken" based on teh describtion. If that is truly the case then I see why it would take so long. Getting broken bolts out in that area isnt the easiest and I would want someone to take thier time.

But you need to ask them if they took the VANOS unit out first. If they didnt then they are feeding a line of BS.
