Question Turbo e36 or e46?

I'm a new member on hear looking into the BMW way of life and need to decide if I should be looking for an e36 M3 or an e46 M3.

My goal with this car would consist of installing a custom single turbo setup with a nice pump gas tune for a daily driver. Of coarse supporting mods will be mandatory but is a complete motor build mandatory? My goal in WHP would be around 500. I have heard many mixed reviews as to which car would be the best to turbo.

Keep in mind this will be a daily driver and a reliable setup is most definitely needed. Any information and opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanx.

500whp turbo'd daily on pump gas that needs to be reliable... How much do you have to spend? You should be able to do it for under 10k for an E36 but for a E46 M3? It'll be over 10k.

EDIT: That said, if you can afford it, of course a turbo'd E46 over the E36. I don't get why this would even be a comparison.

Wait to see what Maximum Psi and Techinque Tuning come up with for their turbo kit for the E46M3 using the stock DME. Not sure if it will be 500 rwhp on pump gas, but maybe not too far off.

I have a 500+ rwhp E36M3 turbo. Lots of fun. But I'd prefer the newer, more modern car for a daily driver. There are many 500+ rwhp E36M3 turbos and several tuners who can tune the stock DME for it.

This

Call Maximum PSI, they have a lot in the works that most do not know about. He has custom turbos on both of his own vehicles. Your goal will not be a problem at all..
I would do the E46

Thanx for all the input guys...the reason y I was told go with an e36 m3 do a turbo kit was because of a better compression ratio than the e46? Not sure how that sounds but correct me if I'm wrong lol.

You can always change compression ratios on motors by swapping out the pistions to lower comp ones so I wouldnt be worried with that. The E46 should be able to hit 500whp on pump gas without having to change cams or pistons. The E36 however will require cams and pistons to be swapped out.

"The E36 however will require cams and pistons to be swapped out." Don't agree that it "requires" cams and piston's to reach 500whp on an E36M. An s52 obd1 with TRM stage 2 kit can reach these goals with just a .140 MLS HG. But I do agree you "should" rebuild the engine properly with piston's, cams and etc., to could get 500whp at a lower PSI. Which I feel over all would make a more reliable car if tune and built properly. I remember seeing a guy get 500+ at 15 PSI on bimmerforums. here it is http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1744288

There are members on here in this section that make 500+whp.
Shouldn't be a problem on the e46 platform.
