I thought I maybe pinched the gasket or something putting the cover back on, but the gasket looked fine so I really don't know. Maybe its just a bad gasket. It is rather hard for only being 3 to 6...

I decided to give my back a work out this past weekend.

Cleaned ICV
Replaced ICV to intake hose
Removed bracket under the intake that apparently contacted starter wires

No idea really. I will have owned my car for 3 years at the end of this month and the SSK was in there before I bought it. I honestly have never heard of an OEM shifter failing besides the "ball"...

The "s" and "m" number seem to be a natural progression of the motor line. The 50 to 52 change conveniently happened in 1996, same time as the obd1 to obd2 switch.
