Your head needs to be decked by a machine shop. You can skip this step but it is not encouraged. I just did my HG and had my head decked simply for the piece of mind.

Sounds like it.
It doesn't sound like they are fully gone, as your shifter will move a seriously noticeable amount. But they're probably on their way out/damaged.

You may be able to 'rebuild' them (I did this on my pickup, though the refresh only lasted a year or so before the spring gave in again).
Could save you some cash over buying brand new.
