Start there. Do your oil & filter. Crawl under it and look around it. Examine the exhaust setup, look at the front axles, do the air filter....

The (hardtop coupe) door swings open fine but it must be shut a lot harder for it to completely catch closed. It partially catches closed if I do not shut it...

I as because the racecar is a non-M E36. It uses a de-powered rack so that OEM rag joint is taking a lot of twist abuse...

Another vote for the CTS-V. Had an '11 and sold it for $34 a year ago. They will come down more still in the next few years, then I think the prices will stabilize as there are rumors that Caddy...

Adjusts fast and easy with a lot of setup knowledge from TC as needed. However, we set it once using TC's recommended settings...

It's a timing issue or else fire would not physically be allowed to go out the intake.

Our race car for AER & WRL has TC Kline. Not cheap.
Easy to install, great support from a group that races the E36. If you call, you'll likely talk directly to "TC".

Comp check time.
I suppose you could set #1 at TDC (Use a dowel in the spark plug hole to get it set to TDC, right?) ...and pull off the front cover to expose the cog & see where the timing marks...

Backfiring into the intake typically means timing is off. Like way off. No guarantee on that diagnosis but with an interference engine as the case...consider a couple of things:

Agree. 12-14K as long as the major stuff is working and maintained. Bolster wear is generally expected and OK however...tears/cracks/holes are not expected & should be fixed to get the best dollar....

Drilled a hole in the spare tire well to access the fill plug...then foil tape to cover the hole back up
(on the race car).
