Re: Ohlins R/T vs. KW V3

Yep, 10mm or 3/8".

Coincidentally, I measured the RT to increase bump travel relative to stock/koni struts and factory bumpstops, using OE strut mounts in both cases. That is, the RT let the front...

Re: Ohlins R/T vs. KW V3

That picture above is showing GC street plates with adapters not suited to the RT strut shaft, iirc. The RT has a square shoulder, forcing you into the much shorter inserts, thus compromising droop...

Re: Sold the Jet Black, picked up an E90 M3

The S65 as a motor is badass but to your point, it really needed to be pumped up a bit and put in a lighter car. Imagine the 4.4L in a lightweight 46M? Holy mother!!

Honestly, the F80 would be...

Re: Sold the Jet Black, picked up an E90 M3

The chassis is more fun than the E9XM 100% of the time because it's just so superior. The steering's killer on-center feel and the ultra tightly-mounted suspension and the super rigid chassis really...

Re: Ohlins R/T vs. KW V3

Main problem with those 'camber' plates is that for a given ride height they reduce bump travel 10mm, which is a lot. On the flip side, for a given bump travel they increase ride height 10mm, which...

Re: Sold the Jet Black, picked up an E90 M3

I agree that the 46M is the perfect size, and, could be a little lighter. But here's the thing with weight - the absolute number is secondary. What matters more is how the car feels from behind the...

Re: Sold the Jet Black, picked up an E90 M3

Yes, it's bigger and a little heavier. But that only matters relatively. There isn't distinct line with that. The 46M is heavier and bigger than an E36 M3 - the latter is notably more "flick-able" -...

Re: Sold the Jet Black, picked up an E90 M3

I'm sure the M2 Comp is killer since it gets, among other things, the S55. I just don't like the way the car looks in person (or any 1/2 series). It's too short/tall and looks awkward. If I were...

Re: 17 inch tire choices actually pretty good?

In order to maintain the OE 26" rolling diameter with a 17" wheel you'd need an extremely tall sidewall. I'm thinking this would destroy handling response, no? So, to avoid this you'd need a much...

Re: Sunroof delete panel options.

The void isn't bad at all. Really my only minor complaint is the unfinished CF from the inside - I would cover that with high quality marine black vinyl for a stealth look.

But as-is it's fine and...

15k on ECS arms, great so far. My alignment guys loves them.

Re: Engine running hot

Yes, this definitely happens with age. While I agree with Terra that we don't see these radiators fail (read: pop) like we did on the 36, an old radiator will have a bunch of crap in it.

It...

I'd also do the Tstat and be sure you go genuine BMW for these parts - the aftermarket radiators are sub par in my experience. You should be good after these parts - gauge should stay pretty much...

Re: Sunroof delete panel options.

Looks like a factory sunroof from the outside (a good thing).

The real question is how does it look from the inside once everything is back together. Ideally you wouldn't even know the panel is...

Re: StopTech Street/Sport or Hawk HPS Brake pads?

Never like these on this chassi. Poor bite, inconsistent power, and, I faded the shit out of them on my normal mountain run - never faded the stock pads on the same run.

Your mileage may vary, of...

Re: Best Daily Driver Suspension?

Yes, I'm aware that the Dinan JRZ's are NLA and was half tongue in cheek with my comment - if they were still available AND they felt more or less the same as a Koni then they'd be a poor value.

Re: Best Daily Driver Suspension?

What do you mean? Memory says that they take a standard 60mm spring front and rear which means endless options, no? (Just need the correct upper front perch is all). I ran 300/400 TCK VSS alloys on...

Re: smg to manual swap value

Good post. Agree that swapping isn't for everyone but I just wanted to paint a realistic picture that 'value' is very subjective and based on the car itself. One cannot definitively say to what...

Re: smg to manual swap value

The problem is that, today, finding the car you want in the color/options/condition you want is not easy. The transmission should be of no concern, realistically, since swapping these cars is well...

I have not but if they feel the same then the JRZs are a poor value. Save a bunch of coin and just get the Konis.

Sure, could be. As I said, been a while so perhaps I'm not recalling.

I actually have konis in the car and dinan springs in the rafters. Hmmmm..... I have been thinking about trying it again.

Re: Best Daily Driver Suspension?

I'll second the Koni + Dinan combo. It's quite nice for a sporty street setup with a very mild drop. You can tell it's lowered but it doesn't look like a lowered car, if that makes sense.

Good...

Re: those that had SMG & converted to manual

I love both manuals and SMG/DCT so, putting the SMG's reliability aside, I would not consider the swap a great value, per se. It's expensive to do right and in the end you gain some and you lose...

Re: SMG adaption for 3.91 gears?

Dude, no.

In manual mode it will downshift at 1k rpm. It is MEANT to hold the gear you're in until the very last possible moment (stalling) since it thinks you want to be in full control. If it...

Re: SMG adaption for 3.91 gears?

Yep, definitely usable and fun, particularly in an SMG car. Makes the car a LOT more punchy. 3rd and 4th in particular become explosive. Just know that you'll pretty much always be in a gear higher...

Re: SMG adaption for 3.91 gears?

Re: SMG adaption for 3.91 gears?

The reason it doesn't make sense is that the SMG will downshift for you, in manual mode, at precisely 1k rpm. Never higher. This is NOT the...

Fair enough. Not how I ever used the SMG which is why I see no point in this fix but carry on:)

And no, the auto mode is never good, ever. It is convenient at times, sure, but never good.

Re: SMG adaption for 3.91 gears?

yes, it only affects auto mode at WOT upshifts. There are no other side effects in my experience. Manual mode is 100% unaffected, and, auto mode works perfectly in all other scenarios.

Why?

It's literally only necessary to correct WOT upshifts in "automatic mode" which I can't fathom matters to anyone.

Re: Advanced Fuel Dynamics - PROFLEX E85 flex fuel option

Good stuff but I'm confused on why you'd run pure e85. If the stock timing targets are hit around 93/94 octane then about 4 gallons of e85 are sufficient.

No?

Precisely.

I too found the E86 (non M) to be very cheap/unrefined and was turned off by that even though I'm sure the M is a hoot.

It really does make sense, and helps, actually. Thanks for that.

Although, funny thing about the 46M is that, for me, I've always had little desire to do power mods as it's always satisfied me....

The lower range is actually good - up to 4k. Plenty of torque, which directly contradicts the numerous "lacks torque" complaints common with this car. It doesn't need any more low...

Yep, they absolutely nailed it with the 46M. The combination of the max road speed in each gear combined with the gear spacing combined with the shape of the power band is pure perfection.
