Re: Best M3's... In order

Last I checked, I don't live in Europe. US E36 is a glorified 328is. I would (and did) own an E46 330i before I ever consider a US E36 M3.

And on top of the engine, E46 has better suspension, is...

There's a lot that sucks about this state, but our car/driving laws are some of the best. I'm particularly fond of non-state troopers not being allowed to use radar and the out-of-state tickets not...

Re: Best M3's... In order

There isn't much special about the engine. It's a cut down S38. Barely makes more power than the contemporary M20, actually makes less torque, but still has the higher maintenance of its big brother.

Ozone generator supposedly works well for those, though I've never personally been in a before/after example.

Re: problem with dme shut down after s54 swap...need help!!!!

There is a prototype MSS52 software variant included in the E39 daten files that's actually tuned for an S54. If the resistor and chassis byte don't do the trick, could try flashing that software to...

Re: problem with dme shut down after s54 swap...need help!!!!

Yeah, if resistance is the issue (certainly plausible, though does make me wonder why none of the various S62 swaps have seen similar issues), pulling the loop should take care of it.

Honestly,...

Worst engine and worst handling of the bunch. It looks cool, but that's about it.

Re: problem with dme shut down after s54 swap...need help!!!!

M5 has the same DSC module as the other E39s, just coded differently. As far as I'm aware, DSC modules always have one of the terminal resistors. In the DSC module's case, said resistor is internal -...

Re: Pentosin MTF2 Discontinued

Problem with synchros is sulfur additives. GL5 doesn't specifically mandate sulfur as far as I know.

For what it's worth other bmw manuals get MTF-LT5, which is Pentosin FFL3, which is the PDK...

Re: Sold the Jet Black, picked up an E90 M3

Big thing with the CSL tune is that it doesn't premptively pull timing nearly as much as the non-CSL tunes. So even though the various ignition and fuel maps don't look super different, it stays at...

Re: Pentosin MTF2 Discontinued

My understanding is that there isn't anything inherently harmful to brass about the GL5 spec, but older oils tended to use non brass-safe additives to attain the pressure requirements.

Ah yeah I forgot about that. On the E46 I think that only applies to the SULEV, and possibly some of the 4-banger valvetronic models that we never got in the US. Otherwise as far as "old generation"...

Re: problem with dme shut down after s54 swap...need help!!!!

MSS54 is basically an MSS52, and the E39 M5 comes with both the PWM relay and the DSC 5.7 system. There is a switch to change the DME to look for a Bosch DSC instead of a Teves/Contintental system,...

Re: Sold the Jet Black, picked up an E90 M3

Full N/A S54 would probably do the trick. 288/280 (maybe even high lift) cams, stepped headers, and airbox should get you pretty close (if not beyond) stock E9x power. Get a stroker on top of that,...
