The official safety cars are M cars, so they usually take hot laps on the track with people from the media and/or celebrities. At least that's what I've seen at Indy and at Laguna.

2x2 is the pattern of the carbon fiber, that and the weave pattern gives it depth when you look at it. This kit will indeed fit a 6sp.

A co-worker has a 1st gen rx-7 with over 200,000 miles. Everything stock, he still daily drives it to work, and I believe the engine hasn't been opened yet but not 100% sure.

What about using both the tabs and the dowels? The dowels can be put in the extra set of holes that are being made in the Dr. Vanos pumps, for example. I think that would not only take some stress...

I'd take off the rotor, cut a slot on the broken stud with a dremmel, and try to get it out with a screw driver. Those screw extractor can be a pain if you don't have a good drill and bits.

Soak it in PB blaster overnight, and then try again with a breaker bar. You could always use a small torch to heat the things up. Or you can invest in an impact gun.

I'd pass on anything rebuilt but that's just me. Did you check the subframe? I'd pull the valve cover and check that the vanos exhaust/intake tabs are in good shape and that the cam gear bolts are...

Thanks for the DIY, and specially pics of the tools you used. I tried tightening those bolts before but wasn't sure how to go about it due to the ackwards angles.

That sucks. I was talking to someone that works at a local BMW dealership this weekend and they told me the most common vanos failure he has seen are the broken tabs.

They should have them at pep boys/napa/autozone/kragen/o'reillys and even walmart. I wouldn't get hung up on using a "marine" pump, just any pump with a long enough hoses. my pump didn't fit...

I called another indy shop and they quoted me around this price, so I'm definitely getting it done for piece of mind as well.

An indy shop quoted me $3k to replace the bolts. I don't think i'll be giving them a call back or taking my car there for anything.

Agreed. Any way people want to slice it or justify it, it doesn't change the fact that the structural design of the chassis is suspect.
