No it won't hurt anything.

Put the car in neutral, you may need to play with the hood sensor to do so with SMG.

Love my Snap-On stuff but not for everything.

My ratchets, electric impact guns, ratchet wrenches, and some misc special tools are snap-on. Expensive but worth it when they're used a lot IMO!

Mine was reinforced at 56k. Did bushings at 115k and found a hairline crack. Car had 5 track days in between and isn't driven hard on a regular basis. Weld-in plates are not a permanent solution IMO.

Re: DIY: Subframe Foam reinforcement

Guys..

1 kit per mount! 4 kits to do the entire rear end!

Each kit has 2 siamese tubes.

If ECS is selling individual siamese tubes you need 8 for all four mounts.

Re: Coilover install

You paid way too much. Coilovers take 1-2 hours to install. RTAB's may have given them a hard time but doesn't mean they can charge you that much.

I think a reasonable amount would be 400-500.

Re: DIY: Subframe Foam reinforcement

No science, just common sense. It's simple. Epoxying plates adds an extra layer to the bottom portion of the floor pan sheet metal. Will it help spread the load of the subframe, absolutely. Will it...

Re: Differential leak and bad bushings?

Not likely to cause any drivetrain damage, just slop.

Sounds like a reasonable list, just make sure your VANOS parts list is complete. You can also throw new plugs in if you feel like it.

Re: DIY: Subframe Foam reinforcement

That's the dilemma. It's either sack up and weld + foam, or risk not being able to weld later on.

I had my own car reinforced with welded plates at 56k. At 115k I went in to do subframe bushings...

Re: DIY: Subframe Foam reinforcement

Welded plates aren't a permanent fix. Epoxied plates are even less permanent.

I think welded + foam is the most permanent you're going to get without a welded in cage.

Re: Differential leak and bad bushings?

No problem.

Excess drivetrain movement possibly causing more clunking than normal. A good determination of a bad front diff bushing is if you're experiencing a small but noticeable clunk when you...

Re: Differential leak and bad bushings?

The bushings are definitely shot. While it's not something you need to tackle immediately, I would definitely recommend replacing sooner rather than later.

Diff seal seepage is normal, although...

Re: Yes another Vanos inquiry. Sorry.

If you're replacing everything then I would recommend a specialist if the local shop hasn't done this before. You will need the cam locking bridge and bottom end locking pin for timing.

Re: Yes another Vanos inquiry. Sorry.

If I'm reading this correctly and you're only trying to replace the VANOS solenoid, the answer is yes. The local BMW shop should be able to handle it no questions asked.

If you're insisting on...

That's what you'd think, right!?

Unfortunately, I've heard otherwise. I've had family there but won't go into that here :)

Yup.

I also realize you're talking about getting a job in the parts department. I think parts has marginally less BS to deal with since they don't deal with many problematic customers like sales...

You do NOT want to work at a BMW dealer or any dealer in general. Pick another career path my friend, you'll thank me later.

Re: What's this chunky stuff in my valve train?

You can clean what you can see, but you won't get everything.

The part is cheap and easy enough to replace that it just makes sense to throw a new one on and be done :twocents:
