It depends on brake fluid. DOT 3 and 4 can be cleaned with water/soap, but a lot of water. You can also probaly get a few cans of brake parts cleaner and spray away.

You are forcing metal parts with some sharp edges (knurled bush joint) past its intended range of motion, so it "digs" into its surroundings, ball bearings, sleeve, joint surfaces, scarring them....
