It's not so much up or down as it is which contacts the forward rotation of the rotor's face first. The smaller sized piston should contact the leading contact point of the rotor as it is rotating...

I guess I should chime in.

I suspect the photos that show the grinding (sparks) are of the rear brake dust shields since the rear brackets are aluminum.
