thoughts on older M3 vs. newer f30

So I've had this 95 M3 coupe 5mt for over a year now. I'm thinking about selling it, and my current daily driver, and consolidating into a single car. Thinking about a f30 328i or 335i with M-sport and 6mt. I want something as fun to drive as the M3, but with warranty and modern bells and whistles. We only have two garage stalls and the M3 gives us a 3rd car.

What I love about the M3 is steering/cornering road feel. It's not super fast, but plenty fast enough. It's the most engaging, connected to the road car I've ever driven. Sounds and looks awesome. I've only driven one 328i msport (2015) on a lame test drive, and I couldn't get a feel for it. I know the auto review world hounds the f30 for lack of steering precision/feel. I know it's a subjective question, but do you all think the f30 m-sport (don't want to spend the big dollars on a new M3... I don't need a "super car") would feel disappointing compared to e36 M3s? Just curious about the thoughts of those who know these cars so well.

No current 3 will have the feel of your e36m. Not even close. Did exactly what you're thinking 8 years ago with a 335 6mt. I'm back in an e36m. With that said, if you want new, fun, light-ish, 6mt, go look at a 228i 6mt, MSport with track handling package and no other options. That's about as close as you'll get to a new e36m.

Exactly my thoughts^^

That said, the base 2/328i steering is pretty bad. Very light and dead. Also, the motor, while immense in the midrange, really struggles up top and, is very laggy down low. Plus it sounds bad.

I just don't think that car will satisfy long term but its worth a look. If the track package fixes the steering it might be viable. Otherwise they're very dull cars....but very nice.

Edit - the best looking new BMW car is the 3 series with M sport kit. Very handsome car to my eyes. The 4 looks good but not quite as.

I don't know why, but none of the new BMWs tickle my pickle! None! I don't even keep up with all that new badging either. At times I do think that the new bells and whistle are nice, so I just install my own and the itch goes away.

Almost made it out today to drive a very low mileage 2015 335i msport. They take big hits depreciation-wise once they become used, and that makes their outrageous msrp more palatable. From what I've read, the engine is and sounds great on this car, but the steering (and probably overall feel) has been criticized harshly.

I think you all are probably right-- the feel of the car will be dull in comparison to my very tossable e36m3. After I get a chance to test drive this newer car, I guess it's likely to be a decision about balancing the tradeoffs. I mean, will it be that much less fun to drive, such that the positive attributes wouldn't make up for road feel?

I guess I could always look to rent a garage space somewhere, keep what I have, and save the dough.

Wow. I actually really like the feel, and power of the new cars. They all take getting used to to appreciate. I wonder how many of you spent any significant time behind the wheel.

E36 is the only M3 that I really like after driving all of them. The newer ones are faster; that's cute. Double or nothing against my 997

E36 M3 is the best of them all. It's a joy to drive it and I really like the old boxy look of it. Keep the E36 if you could!

My only experience is a week in a base 328 rental. Very nice car, very fast. But not fun at all. I'd much rather drive a ZHP.....way better steering and overall feel. Plus, I've never met a turbo engine I loved and surely never a turbo four I even liked. That thing would be ultra laggy with a manual. That motor has almost no high rpm pull.....it's like dead past 5k and slow below 3k and hauls ass from 3-5k.....talk about annoying.

I just wasn't impressed with the car at all.....was actually mad that I paid extra for it. Now, would it be a fabulous everyday city car? Hell yes. And again, I had the base model so things might be different with different options (which in and of itself is very lame - you should get great steering in all versions like 36/46/92).

What's your budget? Why not consider an E46 M3 or even an E92 M3?
