Very poor key reception (video evidence!)

Hey guys, first things first -- I have 2 wireless keys, I've put brand new batteries in both of them, and they both do the same thing.

I have extremely low reception when it comes to the keys. In order to unlock the doors or pop the trunk I basically need to be on top of the vehicle. In order to start the car, I need to take them out of my pocket and get them close to the button.

The video explains it all.. I apologize it's kind of shaky. If you turn your sound up you can hear me clicking the buttons on the key, and pushing the start button a couple times. I put a couple annotations in there too.

Anyone have any ideas on what could cause this?

Thanks everyone.

That's not normal. I have a PDF of the whole Comfort Access system which I tried to upload here (no dice) -- which pretty thoroughly explains the e90 series Comfort Access system, looks like there are 6 antennas.

For a 2013, you should still be under warranty right? this would def be covered.

I'll try to PM it to you.

Mine is pretty bad as well. In for answers!

When I'm in the car it will turn on the car from my pocket though

I've got the same issue. Works fine inside the car but for the trunk I actually have to lift my knee up to get the key closer to the button. In for a fix if anyone finds one!

I haven't tried removing the back window tint yet.. the last time I was at the dealer that's what they told me it was. So until I at least try that, I can't really hold their feet to the fire.

Do you guys have tint on your rear windshield? The previous owner of my car was big into speed detection/jamming because he spent a lot of money installing a remote control flip up/down license plate and an expensive detection system. I read online that certain metallic tints are known to throw off radar detection, so I'm under the assumption he did that also? I don't really know how to test for it.

Not really looking forward to removing the tint and potentially ruining the defroster/antenna in the process, which is why it isn't done yet.

I have tint, have not removed it. But iirc the metallic tint you're referring to is rarely used and hard to come by now a days. So I don't think that is the issue

Thank you for the response. The only reason I thought it was done was because the PO went through a lot of effort to install many "anti-radar" devices, so I was figuring he went out of his way to find that tint with the metallic properties.

Do you know if there is a way to test the tint to see if it's metallic? Is it conductive, can I test for continuity?

I'd just hate to go through the efforts of tearing it off, risk ruining the rear defroster and having to replace the rear glass, all for nothing.. which is why I haven't done anything yet.

Not sure if anyone's ever told you this, but that's a nice M3.

First of all, thank you! I didn't see that response when you made it.

Second of all, I had the rear window replaced with factory glass, and the entire reception problem completely went away. I can now unlock/lock the car from across the street, the door handle controls work every time, I don't have to remove the key from my pocket to start the vehicle, and all of the stations of the radio come in clearly.

I took some photos of the glass that came out. Looks like the PO actually had 2 different layers of tint. One looks like it was professionally installed and covers the entire glass (short of the brake light). It looks to be of normal darkness level.

The other piece looks like it was hacked on there by a 6 year old, it was thick, and completely black. I have no idea what he was trying to accomplish with it.. but I'm guessing all he did was screw up the antenna.

I got progressively closer in the photos, int he first one you can see the 3 different shades (blacked out, tinted, and clear where the light is). Then in the last one you can see my little buddy.

Thanks everyone for the input. Just wanted to post this update in case someone else may wonder one day why all of the reception in the vehicle is terrible.. start with the back window.

Glad to hear that you got it fixed, but why did you remove the glass?
....why not just remove the tint.
