View Full Version : M3 Delimma
ChasesFury Mon, Sep-26-2005, 03:23:46 PM Been reading everything on here for a couple days now. There was a post similar to this. My delimma is to get the e46 m3 or e90 m3 or cayman s or cayman turbo (if it comes out). I currently own a 2001 audi S4 and live in denver.
Feelings about the e46 m3. Let me first start out by saying that the current m3 is one of the sexiest cars in my opinion, the exterior couldn't be anymore perfect. I absolutely love the interlagos blue color as well. Performance wise its phenomonal. 333hp 0-60 roughly 4.7-4.9 depending on who you talk to and the handling is top notch definalty better than my car. One question that I have is bmw going to use the interlagos blue in the e90 m3? I know they have it for the new m5.
Feelings about the e90 m3. I would want the coupe version as well as a manual. Exterior is what I fear although I had a new 3 ser following me yesterday and it looked sweet. If they had the interlagos blue it would make it that much better. As far as performance wish there was some concrete specifications out there. From what i gather v8 400-430 hp 0-60 4.2-4.5.
Feelings about cayman s. Looks very sexy but to slow for my tastes 0-60 5.1 but at speed quite quick. but if they did a turbo which probably come out around the new m3 it might be worth looking into. Of course MZ4 is also in mind which might blow all of these cars out of the water.
Just hoping to get some thoughts from this forum.
I know the release date for the new m3 is highly discussed on here but a 2007 release is that the general concensus.
vivid Mon, Sep-26-2005, 05:37:16 PM All your questions about the E90 are impossible to answer... Most on this board would settle for a pic of the E90 coupe and if they could see what the M versions would look most of us would be ecstatic just to know the style... The options, colors and other specifics won’t be out for a while... I don't think anyone can answer you questions you have right now, maybe this time next year we would be better equipped to do so.
detective913 Mon, Sep-26-2005, 06:12:18 PM i had that problem too. i have decided to get the e46 m3 03/04.. and trade in couple years from today when the e90 m3 comes out. i will get my e46 m3 within 2 weeks..
good luck..
vivid Mon, Sep-26-2005, 06:20:57 PM E46 is a great car and it will hold you over till the E90 M comes out.

If I were you, I would get a low optioned E46 M3 at around $52-55K, then add the Dinan stage3 setup.
Benefits:
1. Can all be done at the dealer prior to leaving with the car and still have the 'factory' feel to it. It would still have a 4 year warranty. And yes, I know it's Dinan's warranty and not BMW's---still better than no warranty. People on this forum will bad mouth Dinan stuff but you can't beat it for the clean (non-modified) look and performance. All depends on what you want. As usual, you typically get what you pay for.
2. Price (around 80K) would be similar to a fully loaded Cayman S., yet have vastly superior performance.
3. Supercharger will be a big benefit in high altitude

there are a lot of better companies out there than Dinan...especially for the price....when it comes down to price and performance...Dinan just does not add up...
BMW F1 Mon, Sep-26-2005, 11:57:03 PM Personally if you have the M bug, go for it now and look to upgrade in Mid 07/08. The S4 is certainly a fantastic car and competes well against our M but as you have pointed out, they are Worlds apart.
Currently BMW are keeping any E90M3 secrets very close to their chest which is fantastic I have to say. A lot of the European car companies release information way to early for mine but Im sure this is just to spook their competitors.
Keep an eye out in this forum for future updates but for mine, buy the E46M and enjoy.

Are you planning to drive the M3 in the winter in Denver? I just got my M3 a month ago and I have to tell you that it's SO nice I'm really wondering if I want to do that. I'm thinking about getting an STI for a winter car and letting the M3 be a garage queen for 3 months. I will take the M3 out on the "nice" winter days but otherwise I can't bear the thought of sand & salt crashing into the car from plow trucks.

I'll tell you what i'm doing;
The way you've described the current E46 M3 tells me one simple thing about you. You simply LOVE it. Also so do I man, and the way I've figured things is as such: Purchase the current M3, the one you're in love with, and regardless of whether or not you really like the new M3, you can still have one until the next splurge on a car. Personally this is the M3 I fell in love with, and theres no guarantee that it will be true for the next E92 M3 as well, though I think in your position it would be best to get a CPO M3 so that someone else took the depreciation hit, that way if you DO infact like the new m3, you have money for it.
The new CaymanS is very enticing is it not?
:agree:
ChasesFury Wed, Sep-28-2005, 05:31:05 AM I appreciate all the input. And I plan on keeping my S4 for my winter car unless I leave the Rockies.
I looked briefly at some of the after market stuff Dinan and activewerks. My biggest question is what is the most reliable for say a stage 2 and then most reliable for stage 3?
Type-Zero...I think I'm in the same boat as you just gonna have to make a decision soon, I'll keep ya posted.
