Okay, so it seems the 17th or the 18th are our talked about dates. So, lets make this the offical thread.

Keep in mind, as we get closer to fall and start to have color changes in the trees, the amount of traffic volume will increase dermatticaly up along the skyline drive area. Something to keep in mind.

As for me, the date sounds 'okay', but I can't be 100% sure until we get closer due to school.

Date doesn't matter to me as long as it isn't the end of the month. Any 5-0 worries on Skyline, or is this simply a sight-seeing cruise? I've been lucky on Skyline, but not the Blueridge.

Last time I was on skyline I didn't see any cops, however; the ones that DO post up there are state troopers, which can be nasty.

The speedlimit is only 35 on that road, which actually kills the fun from time to time. Regardless, this is more of a fun road trip that's mainly sightseeing. There's beautiful views and plenty of places for good photo-ops.

This trip is a time consumer though. The last time I went to skyline drive I was gone about five hours, and I only drove 1/2 of the way down the road and back.

where is skyline drive at? how far is it from vienna, VA?

Sirius
Wed, Aug-31-2005, 08:45:52 PM
Skyline drive is about 30-45 mins west of Fairfax if you go down 66. Skyline drive then goes south down through the mountains and ends near the bottom of VA. (The road is about 105 miles long)

(Skyline drive is the red center line in the map going all the way south)

There are a few places to do this, and fortunately the whole area has already been laid out for us a few times by another group of car enthusiasts - if people decide to go this route.

I have done this type of meet 3 times with the S2000 crowd and everytime we start by meeting at a restraunt because many people drive a few hours to get there ( ) and they're hungry by then. There is a really fun route up to Skyline that we always take. In fact that route is so much fun we leave Skyline as a caravan road for the end of the day when people are heading out on 64.

Here is one of the meet threads on s2Ki: http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=180900&hl=afton

Umm.. I thought we were going to follow the S2000 route?

Yep, but where are we meeting?

Here's what I propose:

Meet at the Blue Ridge Pig for BBQ. It is right next to a gas station, so we can fuel up before heading out. The BBQ isn't bad either ;)

To get to the Blue Ridge Pig:
2226 Rockfish Valley Hwy
Nellysford, VA 22958

Take I-64 West from Charlottesville to exit 107 (Route 250)
Take 250 West
After about 5 miles, turn left on Route 151 South
After going through town of Nellysford, the Blue Ridge Pig is on the left (approx 12 miles from 250). There is a pig sign out front, it is right next to an "Excel" gas station.
Here is a mapquest link: Nellysford, VA (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&addtohistory=&address=2226+Rockfish+Valley+Highway&city=Nellysford&state=VA&zipcode=&homesubmit=Get+Map)

My memory on getting to the drive spots is a little hazy, but I recall it being basically a straight shot up to the mountain, and then some very twisty stuff up to Skyline Dr.

If you all want me to lead, that is fine.....HOWEVER......I have led the crazy-almost-kill-yourself drives before and after seeing/hearing about friends getting into accidents that way I have retired from that kind of driving in groups on public roads. I think we can caravan (still having some fun) up to a few different places and folks can break off on their own to drive like crazy. Then we can all meet back up in a specific spot at a specific time to head down Skyline.

Sirius
Mon, Sep-12-2005, 02:01:35 PM
No crazying driving. This is a public road after all, not our personal race way (would be nice though... ;)).

Just a nice drive with good photo-ops.

Mon, Sep-12-2005, 02:10:42 PM
I don't think anyone here is into the "drive like crazy kil yourself" style. I think we should all try to keep a caravan and drive responsibly. And stop along the way to take pics.

In the interest of time.. i don't know if we'll have time to go so far south as Charlottesville..??

I am thinking more of:

- Meet at Tysons II and leave at 10AM
- Caravan to Front Royal and begin Skyline Drive
- Proceed down Skyline drive/stop to take pics
- Meet at Big Meadow visitor center for lunch (12-1PM).

Then whoever wants to continue down south for spirited drives on the Loop http://www.bluewheel.com/maps/klugeloop.htm can proceed..

Others (like me) can start heading back home.

What do you think?

The plan is to start that the front royal entrance of Skyline drive and go from there. About half way I would say, eat lunch, turn around and head back home.

Last year when I went down to skyline myself, I only went about 1/2 way down the road and turned around and came back home (Fairfax). That took me 5 hours under theses conditions: A couple 120+mph hits on 66, speeding down skyline most of the time (about 50-60mph), stops for breaks and sightseeing.

Since we won't be doing the speeding part, I expect the trip to take a good six hours at least.

I think we should at least get to BIG MEADOWS and eat there... I'm guessing that will be at around 1PM.

For those who want to call it day, we can head back after lunch and take 211 toward Warrenton (seems like another way back to the 66 without having to go back up Skyline Drive to Front Royal)

Oh yeah, it costs something like $5-$10 to get in, so bring some cash.

What costs $5-$10?

The Southern folks will be heading up to Skyline through some very twisty roads in Charlottesville - if the Northern folks want to have some fun with this, you all can probably head back to 64 with us later on.

Cell phones may work depending on your provider, but it will be spotty. No civilization in the Mountains = no cell towers.

To top off the rest of the day...

Later that evening, i was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in Georgetown and a street cop walks up to my car and tells me to pull over. He said I'm pulled you over for not having front plates!! :banghead: I told him the reason was because I was at a car show earlier and that I already received a ticket today. He was mean at first but ended up being nice and just gave me a verbal warning.

I've been driving cars since '91 with no front plate both here in Northern VA and California. DC is the only place I've ever gotten a ticket for no plate (twice) and then it was by parking enforcement when the car was parked. $50 a crack.

Glad to hear everyone had a nice time. You sure got blessed by the weather gods. It was nice meeting folks at Tysons. Just sorry I couldn't spend the rest of the day with the group.

Yeah, just don't drive through Georgetown or UMCP cuz you have to avoid cops on the side of the road seeing you and pulling you over for not having it haha

Oh, and if you're parked at a meter in DC, i highly recommend you put your front plate in the windshield. The only no-front plate ticket I've received was when I was parked (from a meter maid)!

Yeah... it's gonna cost you $1000+ tho. I don't know if TVonNAV is still in business because I think it was just one guy doing it or maybe they switched their name.

NAV-TV is a much bigger company that does it and can probably provide you with the best service.

DC meter maids will get you for anything and everything. If your car is sticking 2 inches past a no parking sign they'll write you up for it. There's also the recent law where you get a $300 fine if you don't have proof of insurance on you.

Same with talking on a cell phone while driving in DC... also if you are in a 2hr spot parking spot, they enter your license plate and if you are there for more than 2 hours, they give you a ticket !

Apparently Arlington is being gay about front plates now, too. Went out to my car this morning to find I had gotten 2 parking tickets, one of which was no front plate. Bastids. Nothing like getting 2 tickets in front of your own damn house.

I herd one person got a ticket, and the rest warnings

Just 1.. Peter was a good sport about it.. and we all enjoyed the hell out of rippin up the skyline while we did

Court was yesterday.

Verdict: Reduced to speeding 54/35, $100 fine, Reckless charge dropped.

Total cost of ordeal (not including time, loss of work, or insurance hikes): ~$1200!!!

Conclusion: I arrived at court and while waiting to go into the courtroom, the Park Ranger that pulled us over was present and came over to talk to me. He obviously rememebers what happened and wanted to make sure that I was "compliant" in terms of that I will never speed on Skyline again. After going through getting a lawyer and everything, it's safe to say anybody would have learned their lesson this way.

He informed me that on Skyline Drive, people will call it in when people are speeding and they will come out and get you (there's nowhere to run on that road).

If you are doing 30mph over the posted 35mph speed limit, it's an automatic Reckless Driving charge and you will have to go to Charlottesville Federal Court (manditory).

The ranger we had turned out to be VERY nice. First he explained the court process, where we can talk and make a deal before seeing hte judge so everything goes faster. And then he was the one who said was willing to reduce it to simple speeding (his goal was that I don't speed, not stick me with a reckless ticket). I noticed that most of the rangers were pretty cool when guys approached them beforehand to discuss their case and make a deal.

My lawyer was there but didnt' have to do anything besides say, "wow, that's a great deal, you have a very nice ranger". In retrospect, the lawyer money was wasted, but it was necessary in case I didnt get a deal and had to argue my case. That $100 speedometer calibration was definitely pointless in my case.

I'm very glad it's over and I learned a lot, but at a high price.

So if anyone would like to donate ($10, 20, etc) to the M3 Skyline Drive fund (ahem, people that enjoyed the drive), I would greatly appreciate it! My Paypal is impulss@hotmail.com :peace: Rich bought me lunch that day so so far I've raised $7.50.

I think another lesson for you to learn is that, "when speeding, never lead, always follow! :agree: Unless you're at the track of course.

Glad to see your charge was reduced, and that the Ranger handled it the way he did.

I went through the same thing on the Blueridge Parkway two years ago - 100+ in a 45. The Ranger actually clocked me around 75, but knew we were going faster. What really sucked about it was we had two cars ahead of us with walkie talkies to let us know the ranger was coming, but by that time we were almost caught up and had no time to react. The Ranger there only cared that we slowed down. Because I was nice to him from the get-go he wrote me up for 65/45 and also made it so I could pre-pay the ticket since I live a good 6 hours away from the court I would have been tried in. About 20 days before my court date was scheduled the Ranger called me to remind me to pre-pay the ticket (which I had already done).

Today, I don't speed on Skyline or the Blueridge - I have fun on the roads around them :D
