View Full Version : Carbon-Fiber Roof
M52M32M6 Sat, Jan-29-2005, 12:43:02 AM A friend told me that this option is available for the current M5 similar to the roof scheduled for the new M6. Is this accurate or is it a non US option?
From BMW's Website regarding the roof on the new M6:
"The lightweight carbon-fiber roof shifts the physical center of gravity of the car further down than the weight of a normal steel roof"
Thanks.

ArtM3 Sat, Jan-29-2005, 01:02:01 AM they better give us this, if true, because that's my next ride :D
then again, I like a moonroof...

Moonroof, CF, What else you want there Art? A rocket launcher? lol **** the moonroof. The CF roof acts the same as lowering the roof by 3 inches... You can imagine the benefit.

yea, but I want it all! lowering the roof 3 inches, that's a healthy shift in the center of gravity...wonder how much weight?
tifosi Sat, Jan-29-2005, 01:25:06 AM no, that's no going to happen.
InSaNe///M3 Sat, Jan-29-2005, 01:38:04 AM Probably not.
Oh, wrong section :D
DaBean Sat, Jan-29-2005, 03:12:34 AM It might.. but prob just in a special edition... like CSL or maybe ZCP...
And lowering the roof 3 inches? that'll lower the CG about 1/4"... maybe 1/2" TOPS.... I mean, how much does a roof really weigh?? Even if it's 150lb with sunroof, that's only like, what, 4% (I forgot how much M3 weighs).. .so, ok, say the CG is 1/2 the height of the car, which is say, 5 feet... hmm take 2% from half of that... that's like a half an inch... basically, unless you want to hardcore race this car and are interested in doing all the weight-saving mods, you are just as well off having the sunroof, and just lowering the whole car 1/2" with $400 springs... which is probably a LOT cheaper than the CF roof option... I dunno, it's late.. (well, not so much) but I've had enough to drink... so my head isn't all clear...
Oh wait, I forgot to add the weight of the roof... which is say, 50lb.. so shave 100lb... so really, more like 1/3" lower.. not worth it...
snook Sat, Jan-29-2005, 03:14:02 AM cf roof saves 10lbs on m6...
DaBean Sat, Jan-29-2005, 03:19:55 AM cf roof saves 10lbs on m6...
And if it's 10 lb. , then the CG will be lower by 1/30th of an inch.. AKA lunch at McDonald's vs Slim Fast...
Super Gyros Sat, Jan-29-2005, 03:25:20 AM cf roof saves 10lbs on m6...
So it saves 70 lbs in the m3 and 10 on the M6? Why they used "heavy CF" there? Hard to believe...
