Does you engine make a rattle sound as it shuts down when you turn the ignition off? Mine does it everytime. It sounds like valves, kinda like engine knock in a car burning low octane fuel but only for the split second as it shuts down. Thanks.

Unfortunately our cars come with the standard clunk, death rattle and other driveline noises :nixweiss:

100% true.. The rattle is no big deal but if it bothers you just hold the clutch in, shut off engine, and release clutch.

I have never heard that noise before, maybe I just need to pay more attention. However, for a car of this price and class, it does have a lot of annoying "normal" rattles and other noises, more than any other car I have owned.

100% true...

This doesn't happen to ALL M3s. My 02 made the "dying gurgle" but my O1 never does.

I've never heard that rattle. Thanks to my compulsive reading of this forum before picking up my M, I knew the 'hold the clutch down' thing and never shut off the car without doing it. I don't want to know if it rattles. The less flaws I find the happier I am.

I had a 95 M3 that sounded like a bag of marbles were in there all the time. I was told it was because of the timing chain and it was normal. Maybe E-46s have the same inherent noises with the timing chain on shutdown.
