View Full Version : Is this Phoenix Yellow?
zp91hbk Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:12:18 PM sorry...lets try something smaller that loads faster
http://www.thewallpapers.org/cars/bmw/bmw_m3_coupe/thumb/320_bmw_yellow.jpg
Im inlove with this color, and want to order it when I place my order within the next few months...but that cannot be phoenix yellow. It has no greenish bile look to it. I like Phoenix yellow, but it just doesnt look like this whatsoever from other pics. And from the Dakar pics I have seen It looks darker and more shiny. What color is this? Because I WANT IT!
SLVR M Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:20:21 PM Yea, that's PY with a whole lot of light on it. PY takes on different apperances based on the lighting conditions.
Idz21 Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:30:30 PM hmmm that doesn't look like PY at all. Looks more like canary yellow.
zp91hbk Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:30:40 PM So on a bright day it looks like that? I know these are earlier shots back from 2001 thats why I wasnt sure as I was only 16 and couldnt drive yet. Now that Im buying its between this and Laguna because Im just gonna keep the car on the side as a play vehicle and probably not sell it. (really not interested in anything bangle makes).
Laguna looks awesome though....tought choice...but its just for a fun car so I want a fun color
zp91hbk Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:31:51 PM Ya I agree with IDZ21...that cant be phoenix yellow...is canary yellow a bmw individual color?
daytonaviolet Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:32:26 PM not sure what it is.. but kinda looks like Drakar Yellow
Idz21 Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:33:11 PM Ya I agree with IDZ21...that cant be phoenix yellow...is canary yellow a bmw individual color?
There is a bright yellow that is or used to be an individual color. I don't think it was called Canary Yellow though. I think it's Dakar Yellow.
sy0296 Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:34:15 PM it probably started as PY but compression and pic size has taken away a lot of details...load a higher res pic for us to see

Idz21 Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:42:34 PM That is the PY picture from bmwusa.com So it has to be it.
However compared to this pic, of the same car, in the same gallery...... you decide:

zp91hbk Mon, Jan-24-2005, 11:47:57 PM I see...thank you
I like the yellow in like 3 of those pics...dont like it at all in all of the others.. Probably is a sign for me to go to laguna or copy off you and get interlagos.
Any chace I could get interlagos blue with the rims, but keep the interior cosmetics (besides trim) the same? (like steering wheel, steering wheel functions, hand brake ect)
Idz21 Tue, Jan-25-2005, 12:04:20 AM I see...thank you

I'm not sure about the options that you're asking about. That's something you're going to have to try and work out with your dealer. Although I've seen PY in person, and it most resembles the picture I posted.
zp91hbk Tue, Jan-25-2005, 12:24:39 AM seeing it in person...would you buy it? considering i love your car i trust your taste in vehicles...we live in the same state so you pretty much know whats on the road around here...
would you ever buy it?

It depends on which pic you're referring to. Is it 1. The bright yelow version or 2. The darker version?
zp91hbk Tue, Jan-25-2005, 12:40:38 AM well id def buy the bright yellow...the more bile looking one...well i dont think i could stand that
MLINER Tue, Jan-25-2005, 12:55:56 AM thats dakar yellow.
t.wak Tue, Jan-25-2005, 01:04:52 AM That's PSed. :D
zp91hbk Tue, Jan-25-2005, 01:55:00 AM WHAT COLOR IS IT LOL@!@
I cant decide at all...someone with a PY has to know if thier car ever looks anything like this
Idz21 Tue, Jan-25-2005, 01:56:30 AM If it's photoshopped then it would've been done by BMW themselves. But this pic is truely what PY looks like:
http://www.bmwusa.com/NR/rdonlyres/AB05D81B-D0D9-4B63-8A5F-E6724346C9EE/0/0437_07.jpg
It's a metallic color which is why it's got those "metal" hues.
flabmaster Tue, Jan-25-2005, 01:59:27 AM the more bile looking one...well i dont think i could stand that
If you can't stand bile yellow then I wouldn't get PY unless you live in an area where it's really really bright and sunny all the time and never overcast. If you're talking about getting Laguna Seca Blue, you'll have to buy used since it's no longer being produced. If you want Interlagos blue you'll have to buy new.

thats what my car looks like.
flabmaster Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:02:10 AM Oh, I just found 2 pics of PY when the weather was less than stellar:
http://users.adelphia.net/~flabmaster/carpics/02-11.jpg
http://users.adelphia.net/~flabmaster/carpics/03-20.jpg
I think PY looks rather matte and bile-y in anything other than stellar lighting. If it's a nice day out though, then PY looks really good. Then again, be careful if you're considering LSB as it's also a shapeshifter...erm colorshifter...based on lighting conditions.

Daver Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:02:23 AM That does not look like Dakar or Pheonix to me. I don't know what Canary looks like.
BMW has more yellows than you can possibly imagine. Don't limit yourself to colors you've seen or heard of before. Check this out:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38514
Obviously BMW does not have pictures of their cars in each and every color for their Individual site, and obviously they aren't all available standard either.
Between Dakar and Phoenix I'd say Dakar is more likely, but that picture looks a bit more vibrant than most Dakars I've seen. Lighting and camera filters can do anything though.
Unless you know the guy who owns the car, MLINER, please don't comment with such authority. If you're just guessing, say you're just guessing please. Bad facts are worth less than bad guesses.

Daver Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:10:27 AM Hmm...looking at the higher res pic I bet that really is Pheonix. It was one of the early press colors for the M3, and I do recall a lot of attention on that color.
I bet they filtered a lot of the green effect out after taking those pictures.
Still just guessing tho.

flabmaster Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:15:28 AM E46///M302 I've never seen pheonix look that good!! Damn fine pictures!
Idz21 Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:18:23 AM my man photoshopped those nice! :D
zp91hbk Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:44:08 AM THat PY is insanely gorgeous...You can see the yellow in those shots...that whole car is nuts...
I plan to use BMW individual when I order, so I will research for the other yellows available. THanks everyone for the help.
zp91hbk Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:51:21 AM Now I could try to order any of these? I understand that some get through some dont, and I will be paying everything up front so I know I have a better chance then most...But I was thinking that I could only order BMW Colors.
Looking at those yellows I believe FUN YELLOW is Corvette Yellow...which I believe would look great on the M3 with all black interior and aluminum trim...
Dakar is too light...almost looks like a powder
Korono yellow is too mustardy...
But I defintly want yellow...so I will email my stealer and check on Fun Yellow...I do think that was the name of the yellow for C5 corvettes...but I will have to check
zp91hbk Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:52:46 AM http://www.exoticmuscle.com/fun/yellowC5/img5-640x480.jpg
that seems to be the closest to the image i posted
zp91hbk Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:04:29 PM Any chance the dealer has samples of the colors?
Idz21 Tue, Jan-25-2005, 02:14:21 PM Any chance the dealer has samples of the colors?
Yea if they don't have a PY sitting in the lot, they should have a color swatch. Your best bet would be to e-mail a bunch of BMW dealerships within a 100 mile radius to ask them if they have a PY sitting in the lot, and then drive over and take a look for yourself.
Or even ask someone here who has a PY to see if they're within a reasonable distance from where you are.
dmh3 Tue, Jan-25-2005, 11:59:22 PM I drove to a carmax dealer in North carolina from maryland just to see PY color in person. Drove 6hrs down Stayed at carmax for 1/2 hour and dorve 6hrs back. Ordered PY the next day from my local dealer. You should see it in person before you make a decision . the pics just dont look the same IMHO .

I just want simple freaking yellow. WHY on earth cant bmw have a simple yellow as an individual color, not bile yellow, not powder yellow...just simple yellow.

Those colors I linked to are BMW paint codes. Chevy's Fun yellow is not BMW's fun yellow, even if the name is the same. The tint could be similar, or completely different. Don't bet on it until you see a picture of it.
The part# for the BMW color sample box is 01 39 0 009 644 according to my ETK. Not sure how complete that is. Ideally you'll find a dealer that has it, but I don't know of any that do.
You're taking the right approach though. Do the research. Find pics, samples, whatever. Get a list of colors you like and find out what your salesman can do. Just make sure they know the order is contingent on getting one of those colors through BMW NA. My list was LeMans Blue, Avus Blue, Techo Violet, Mora Red, Carbon Black. BMW NA rejected LeMans Blue for me and approved Avus. A car ordered around the same time in Texas was approved for LeMans, same black interior I was ordering. Your salesman may be able to force BMW NA to approve just through determination and persistence.
Good Luck,
-Daver
