Hey guys, I hope you can help me with a problem with my Alpine head unit. I have the CDA-7844, and the volume knob doesn't work correctly anymore. Normally one "click" while rotating the knob causes the volume, for example, to go up or down one level. When I rotate the knob, the volume, for example, sometimes goes up, sometimes goes down, and sometimes does nothing. I end up having to "play" with it in order to adjust things I can't do with the remote, like the fading, subwoofer level, etc.

I'm guessing this isn't an uncommon problem, but I'm wondering if it is a mechanical problem--something I could fix by taking the faceplate apart.

The other strange problem is for some reason it won't play CDs that I make with my CD burner. I suspect it might have something do do with "newer" media, but the few tests I've done haven't given me a definite answer.

The deck is only 4 years old, and I'm surprised a $400 head unit wouldn't hold up a bit better. Thanks in advance for your help.

It could be mechanical, but it is unlikely it can be serviced, I would call Alpine's parts deparment and order another face plate. It might not be that pricey and it probably isn't worth the time to diagnos the problem with the old one.

Well, I called them up and it would be $95 to get it fixed (plus shipping). :banghead: That seems like a lot considering it is about 1/4 the price of a brand new deck. Up until now I really liked my Alpine cd player--I just don't know if I'd spend around $450 on another alpine cd player if the knob is going to wear out after only 3 years. Perhaps I just got a lemon, but I'd really consider a different HU brand next time. Any suggestions?
