I was wondering what experts out there think the best small enclosure subs are? I know some people have said to try the IDMax and Adire Brahma subs, but they all require way too big an enclosure (1.0 cubic feet plus), which will take up way too much room in my 03 convertible. What does everyone think between JL 10w6v2 and Boston Acoustics G510? Any other small enclosure subs that do some serious pounding? I am planning on getting an Xtant 6.1 class D amp (600x1RMS at 2 ohm) to power the sub. Thanks.

Try the Image Dynamics IDQ's. The 10's only require .25 - .50 Cubic Feet. They handle 250 watts RMS. These are SQ subs though, not good for SPL.

250w RMS is not enough. I am looking for a single 10" sub that can put out at least 400w RMS, preferibly more...

If you're looking for that much power out of one sub, it's hard to find a sub smaller than the ones mentioned. Just installed an alumapro sub I had lying around and I'm pumping about 400W RMS out of the 12 and I just used a premade sealed box which is about 1 cubic foot but it's a hatchback style to sit up against the backseat. You'd have to find subs out there and compare the recommended box spacing. If you want smaller enclosure, definitely start with 10s. I think I am still able to fit a set of golf clubs in my trunk even with the sub box.

have you looked @ JLAudio 8W7? a sealed enclosure requires 0.875, and the sub can handle 500W. i'm currently running a JL 250/1 with it, the JL representative suggested a 500/1 (I thought that would've been overkill). it sounds great, its transient, tight and has great extension for a small sub.

Yes I did look into the 8w7, however its RMS power handling is 300w RMS and not 500 as you stated, thus eliminating it from my choices. So far the 4 subs I am looking at are as follows:
1. Boston Acoustics G510-44. 450w RMS, 15mm xmax, efficiency 84.9dB, enclosure size 0.5 cubic feet, mounting depth 6.75"
2. JL 10w6v2. 400w RMS, 15.2mm xmax, efficiency 83.7dB, enclosure size 0.625 cubic feet, mounting depth 6.9"
3. JBL w10GTi. 600w RMS, 17.78mm xmax, efficiency around 87dB, enclosure size 0.75 cubic feet, mounting depth 9.13"
4. Alpine Type X 10". 1000w RMS, 19.1mm xmax, efficiency 81dB, enclosure size 0.65 cubic feet, mounting depth 8.625"
So basically these are what I am looking at right now. I always hear that the JL w6 subs are just awesome, and I havn't had a chance to talk to anyone about the other subs listed. The JBL is weird in that it has dual 6 ohm voice-coils, making it 3 ohm when wired in parallel to an amp, and thus not allowing you to use the full potential of a 2 ohm amp load (and thus forcing you to purchase a more powerful amp to run the same power as you get from running a 2 ohm load). Aside from that, it seems to be a very powerful and efficient sub, and from what I have heard good SQ as well. I have not heard anything about the Alpine Type X, but its specs are very impressive, though it is the least efficient of the subs I have listed, not to mention it will require a very large amp. I am hoping it sounds good and hits hard, and if so then I may go with it. I am currently leaning towards either the JL 10w6v2 or the Boston G510; most likely the latter because it will handle more power than the JL, requires a smaller enclosure, is more efficient, and also because JL's warranty sucks ass (most likely only a 90 day warranty). So any more input is greatly appreciated, especially thoughts on these subs and any others I have not yet looked into. Also, where is a good place to buy Boston Acoustics subs? Thanks in advance.

i'm surprised no one mentioned edesignaudio.com yet. don't let their prices fool you... good subs and require very little space.

Actually you can run the JLs in a 2 ohm configuration. Check out the JL 10w6v2-D4. Has dual voice coils that run at 4 ohms each.

good thing I didn't listen to the JL rep. and decided to run with a 250/1. thanks.

Looks like the 8W7 "can" handle 500W. Although they say that "burnt voice coils are not covered under warranty" when the 8W7 is ran with this much power. Link below.
