I have two questions regarding oil. Are you guys running 10w60 or 15w50, are there any side effects funning the ladder weight oil.
Also is anyone finding they are burning a quart of oil every 3000mi.

thanks

about what kind of oil can go in the e46 m3. I think the castrol tws motorport 10w60 oil is used for various reasons but the main is the fact that the car has had some issues with bearings and oil starvation so bmw used a different oil to help. I would not and do not think it is a good idea to use any other oil than the Castrol TWS 10w60. I know it is expensive but we are talking about a $50,000 dollar car. If you were to use a different oil then you may see the engine oil temp be hotter. I just do not feel it is a good idea to change the weight or type of oil used in the e46 m3.

my suggestion is to stick with the OEM 10W60 for our engines... there is no benefit in minimizing the viscocity range of the oil.

Personally you can really use any oil you want as long as you check with the boys at Service to make sure its AOK. If you dont, you might void your warranty if anything goes wrong. The latter oil nominated above should be OK but the M Techs have designed the Castrol Oil specifically for the M engine. I would stick with this unless you have the late mail on anything else.

Let us know.

hmmmm...........the oil viscosity questions. they're both good oils to use. initially the 10w60 was introduced by ford of europe back in 1994-95 for the escort cosworth. mobil 1 had 5w50 then they dropped it in favour of 0w40. oh boy did they screw up! turbo's were seizing up! so they re-introduced the 5w50 and called it 'rallye spec'. so i tell people the higher the rating the better in terms of high temp protection. but the arguement continues. with machining tolerances so high, ford of america (as an example) uses 0w20 on the 24v taurus. i think i'd stick to the 50's and 60's myself
