View Full Version : MB Quart and Rear Speakers...

I bought 2 pair of 4 inch QSD 210s. I can configure them and work them to fit in the front, however the rear is turning out to be a bigger problem.

It seems that the rear "hole" for the 4 inch speaker is bigger than the speaker itself. The speaker kit comes with some sort of metal ring which, I have still not figured out how to use because the ring is larger than the screws for screwing in the speaker...I personally think the instructions for the MB Quart component speakers stinks...

It's a little hard to explain. Has anyone configured aftermarket speakers in the rear (back seat speakers) of the beamer (especially ones smaller than the hole)? If so, how did you go about doing it? If you have some pics, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Jason

ahhh yes...i too have MB quarts in my car. when i had them installed, the audio place called me and told me of this problem. They said they had put like some kind of new mold around the speakers or something like that.

sorry i dont have a solution for you, just throwing in that i too had to deal with it (kinda)

you can prolly make a "mount" from 1/4" MDF. cut a piece of MDF enough to fit within the area of the mounting location (use the old driver as a template). then just cut a hole with the diameter of the speaker you are mounting - you can even mount the speaker from the bottom if needed. sand the MDF piece, paint black and screw in the speaker. HTH

Nice suggestion. I'll probably go with that.

If anyone has anything else, I'd be GLAD to hear it.

Thanks guys,
Jason

I would return them and get the correct size speakers for the car. You should be able to fit 5.25" components in the front and rear of an e36 without any modification.

I went without rear speakers and I can not tell! I have had people sit in the back and tell me it sounds great (not knowing there were no rears). Granted...you do need a sh*t load of power up front to make all of this happen!

true. if your front stage has good imaging, you could probably go without any rear fill and save you some $$

I honestly don't know how this is possible. Doesn't good imaging require you to be surrounded by speakers on all 4 sides? That's what surround sound is all about, correct? What kind of speakers and headunit are going to give me good enough imaging where I don't need rear speakers? Do I need to amp the front speakers then? Can I use the stock headunit? Please enlighten ;) My rear speakers are blown and I'm looking into possible solutions.

nope. surround sound really only applies to AV applications. in a movie for example, they want you to feel like you are actually in the movie, they will run "background" type sounds from the surrounds, ie crowd noise or nature sounds. for music this does not apply, the most accurate setup will be a single point left and right. since in a car you cant have a single point sound source, the next best thing is componants, with the highs mounted about ear level, since most of your "imaging" comes from high freqs.

rear speakers are really just for the rear passengers, and actually degrades your sound stage from the front seats.

yes, i know some music is being mixed in surround sound, but that is still mostly for home theater applications, to make it feel like you are witnessing a live concert.

if you have A/V in your mobile setup, then rear fills would be great; specially if the DVD player and the amplifier can deliver the surround sound to the proper channels. for music I agree with rocket.

like the H/K system in our M3s - the speaker switch (on center console) tweaks your front stage imaging by changing how the high mounted tweeters and kick panel drivers respond. not the best, but pretty cool regardless. makes the BOSE system in my A4 sound like crap...

I do not have the HK system although I do have the trunk mounted changer. I also have a box with two 10's in the trunk. If I get rid of the rear speakers, do I have to amp the front ones to get decent imaging with the stock head unit? How about an amp with an aftermarket headunit? What do you guys recommend for decent front speakers?

hmm... your deck is the problem not your amp. replace your c33 deck with c43 or cd43 or aftermarket one. if you want something better get oem harmon amp and front harmon setup.. or get aftermarket deck amp componets for the front and JL stealth sub for the back.

m3sc, where did you get your mb quart q series from and how much did you pay? The cheapest I could find was for $480. Btw I retract my earlier statement....5.25" are the correct size for front and rear speakers in a coupe and sedan ONLY. The rear speaker size for converts is 4". I'm totally screwed as I have an extra set of 5.25" mb quart q series comps that I can't install. Now I need to find a 4" component set for the rear.

I bought mine from http://www.woofersetc.com Yeah the price was more than what you can find it for but I trust these guys and got my shipment EXTRA fast.

As for the rears, have you physically CHECKED that the 5.25s won't fit? The 4s were TOO SMALL to use the existing plastic pieces in the rears. I had to rig a custom part.....I'd be curious to see if the 5.25s would hook right in. Although you may have rear spacement issues but the metal looks to be pretty wide.

I'm currently now trying to figure out how to get my damn RCAs down the center. I've posted a center console question, but have gotten limited responses. Some say to remove the trim around the shifter, but near the top of the trim it just acts like it will not budge and I don't want to tear up the car...

Thanks,
Jason

Is your m3 a coupe or sedan? In either case 5.25" speakers should fit snug in the rear deck. I take it your M3 is not a vert.

99 Vert just like yours.
