View Full Version : Your opinion asked - Holland is crazy?
Rutger Mon, Apr-05-2004, 02:57:46 PM OK, here it goes. Before I post this I say that this post is NOT a joke. It's true and people who actually went to college came up with the brightest idea ever.
Background on the story:
In Holland alot of 'minorities/immigrants' have problems integrating. They don't learn the dutch language, they only spent time in their own communities.
The specific problem they're dealing with this time is that most Turkish/Maroc people don't go to the woods. They don't love our nature. The cause for this is that in Dutch woods you can't find food (so they say). Well we have groceries for that! LOL
The idea: plant new woods full of trees/bushes that produce food so the immigrants will go to forests again and enjoy nature.
Of course all this is paid by Dutch tax money.
I'm wondering how you Americans think about this? Immigration in Holland is a big problem and is way behind compared to the USA. We're like 20 years behind with that. Imagine this and give me your insights.
P.S. If you want to make jokes about this. Go ahead! I've not yet decided whether I want to laugh or cry about this. :smash:

I was just in amsterdam 4 weeks ago. I stayed at the grand sofitel demeure right outside the red light district. nice place. The "Grey Area" coffeshop was AMAZING!! highly reccommeded.
gr8shandini Tue, Apr-06-2004, 02:06:14 AM So are the woods still nature after you turn them into an apple orchard? Anyway, it's definitely a strange policy, but I don't thing us 'Mericans have any room to judge anyone else. Hell, we use government money to test the viscosity of ketchup. It seems to me that goverments are screwed up no matter where you go.
Rutger Thu, Apr-08-2004, 11:58:21 AM gr8shandini, are you serious about the ketchup?
Native residents are the only ones being discriminated at this moment. Lots of people are unemployed, but if you hire an immigrant you get a bonus as an employer. How's that?
And now planting woods. Even the immigrants think it's ridiculous.
Ninja K Thu, Apr-08-2004, 12:42:56 PM Looks like the Dutch clearly have their priorities the wrong way around.
heelsonwheels Fri, Apr-09-2004, 11:36:01 AM where did these people get their food before they
immigrated?
maybe the dutch gov should build a 711(convenience store chain)
in the woods...lol
gr8shandini Sat, Apr-10-2004, 01:17:39 AM Yup, I remember one of those 60 Minutes type reports on government waste a few years ago where they interviewed someone from the Food and Drug Administration who's job it was to measure how quickly different brands of ketchup slid down this little sluice box. I'm not quite sure how that protects the American consumer, but I guess someone from Congress thought it was worthwhile.
Challenger 800 Sat, Apr-10-2004, 02:56:10 AM Me and the little woman were killing time in a coffee shop back in the day enjoying some nice vanilla morrocan hash when we had to go somewhere, dont remember where doh!! anyway got pulled over for speeding by the Hwy Patrol and they were driving a fricken 911. Sweet, holland cops got the shizznet hot rods for patrol, they went to tell me they had ordered 100 Vettes for duty as well.

Beowoulf Sat, Apr-10-2004, 03:53:07 AM Most governments are so screwed up one can't help wonder what the hell they are thinking. The problem is that they spend other people's money and they don't have to work for it. I understand their reasoning since it is good to have a better integrated society but some of the stuff they come up with can only be done when totally stoned off their ass.

Just curious, what is the definition of an immigrant in your book?
As a (legal permanent) resident in the U.S., I sure wish the U.S. had a policy like that. ;)

Immigrants in The Netherlands are like : Iraquis, Iranis, Pakistanis, Maroccans, Turkeys etc.
People who are depressed by their governments(and that's very sad) and think The Netherlands are like paradise. :banghead:
OK, The Netherlands are a 'rich' country and 'poverty' doesn't really exist here. Still I have to work very hard for my money here(doh)

I should have been clearer. What is the definition of an "immigrant" in the legal sense? In the U.S., for instance, an immigrant can either be a lawful permanent resident (i.e. a "green card" holder) or an undocumented (i.e. illegal) immigrant. Do those Iraquis, Iranis, Pakistanis, etc. have legal residence in the Netherlands, or are they protected by the Dutch law regardless?
