What is a safe annual income to comfortabillty afford the M.

That would be very hard to say. I'm sure there are other things in your life that you have to pay and stuff. When you buy a car, it's not just buying the car. You have to pay taxes, and licence, and then of course insurance. I don't think that someone else can really tell you how much you should be making, when you make the right amount, you'll know.

Exactly there is always the other things in life you have to pay.

Try to figure out what type of monthly payment you can afford and that may help. If you live at home as some people here do, then you may be able to pay a higher car payment.

I have student loans, a mortgage and a child on the way, so an E36 was the only M car that was affordable.

I dont let a monthly car payment exceed 10-15% of my monthly income... although there are a few cars out there where I might be tempted...
