My BMW dealer said to me last month that in the near future BMW will launch again turbo engines. Once in Europe we pay taxes over the cc or hp, a turbo car is more cheaper than and non turbo car with equal performances. Example:

Audi A4 1.8(1781cc)turbo, 190hp, 8.2s 0-62mph, 150mph top speed

BMW 318i (1995cc), 143hp, 9.3s 0-62mph, 135mph

BMW 320i (2171cc), 170hp, 8.2s 0-62mph, 140mph

BMW 325i (2494cc), 193hp, 7.2s 0-62mph, 150mph

The Audi has the almost the same cc than 318i, the same 0-62mph time than 320i, and the same top speed than 325i. A 1.8cc engine is more cheaper to build than a 2.5cc.

In the countries where the taxes apply on cc, the Audi has a huge advantage (2494-1781=713).

In the countries where the taxes apply on hp, the Audi still have advantage, because has a lower cost engine, and that it means a lower price to the final consumer.

I'm not a big fan of turbo. They sure make a lot of power, but I'd prefer the natural feeling of a high-revving engine... the kind of engine that BMW is so good at producing.
