I have a question about how the SMG gear box work.


Is it like the automatic triptronic ones?

By just tapping the lever up it'll shift up and by tapping down, it'll shift down?...

yea, i could have swore SMG and SMGII M's don't have clutches.

I've taken so many of those I think my body has built up immunity to them.

SMG is sequential manual gearbox - it is a full manual gearbox with computer control of the clutch and gear selection ( the computer even blips the throttle on down shifts ) which gives you the option of a vitual automatic - but the actual gearbox is a true manual.

I have an e30 with 3 litre M3 engine and 6 speed.

My gearbox was a SMG without the computer and a normal gearlever and clutch. The problem was it did not have a detent between 1st and reverse, nor spring loading to the 3/4 plane - the lever used to go to the 5/6 plane. This situation was a pain.

The issue is that computers do not need detents and spring loading like humans do. I don't know how the guy that built my car could race it as it was when I bought it . At full warp you need to know that you are going to get the right gear !

My mechanic modified it to have the detent and spring loading. BMW does not sell parts for the 6 speed ( any problems = Au $9,000 for a new one !) and would not help with advice because the gearbox was not meant to be in an e30. My mechanic had the box machined ( over Au $1,000 for machining alone ) to fit the detent and springs from a 325 5 speed. It now works just like a normal manual.

Regarding the SMG shift - the first ones were push forward for upshifts and pull back for downshifts. SMG II works the opposite -which works in the same direction as your momentum in the car - pull back for upshifts and push forward for down shifts. With SMG II, there are three choices of using the gearbox :-
1. Virtual automatic, 2. paddle shift on the steering wheel or 3. console mounted lever as I described above.

i know i know, im a newbie but hey...just learning what i can before i get this car next year.

i was going to purchase a 04 350Z, but blah the car wasn't near my expectation.
