View Full Version : DIY: OEM LED License Plate Lights for CSL bootlid

Here's my DIY for replacing the regular e39 license plate lights used on the CSL bootlids with the latest OEM LED license plate lighting that comes on the new e60/e90/e92 models.

Fortunately for us E46 owners, we are not subject to any bulb-out errors on the dash, so this is a true plug-n-play option.

Parts needed:

2 BMW LED registration lights (# 63 26 7 193 293) $15/each
2 BMW Universal Socket aka plug connector (# 61 13 6 925 634) $1.40 each
4 BMW Bushing Contacts aka pin contacts (# 61 13 1 383 776) if you want to build your own wire. $0.28 each. I bought 10 as you can see from the pic below.
some 20 or 22 guage wire
heat shrink
or
4 Bushing Contacs with wire (# 61 13 0 005 197) $1.28 each

Pic of parts needed.
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/1.jpg

If you decide to build your own wire connectors, you'll need some 20 or 22 guage wire. I had these spools handy and although they're different guages, they can be mixed and used.
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/2.jpg

Strip some wire for the bushing contacts:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/3.jpg

Crimp the front part of the bushing contact onto the wire with a 28 guage crimp:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/4.jpg

Crimpt the back part of the bushing contact onto the wire insulation with a 26 guage crimp:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/5.jpg

It should look like this when your're done. Make 2 sets in 1 color and 2 sets in another color:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/6.jpg

When the bushing contacts plug into the connector, they are REALLY close to each other, so I used some heat shrink to make sure they would not come into contact with each other and cause a short.:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/7.jpg

Push the bushing contacts into the connector, then plug the connector onto the light. There is a positive and negative side. Note the orientation:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/8.jpg

The trunk wire harness has a connector for the license plate lights. There are three wires but you only need 2. The gray wire (+) and the brown wire (-)

Personally, I like to solder connections, but you can use butt connectors, crimp connectors etc to connect the wires together:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/10.jpg

Heat shrink shrunk. Note I used some heat shrink as well on the unused wire.
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/11.jpg

I put some electrical tape over all the heatshrink and made a bundle:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/12.jpg

Turn on your lights and test:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/13.jpg

Clip the lights onto the trunk:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/14.jpg

Finished pic. They look really clean:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/15.jpg

OEM looks, fitment and quality. No more yellowish lights:
http://jmadventures.gotdns.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/16.jpg

Fun pic. I started playing with the exposure settings on the point and shoot cannon. This pic was taken at 11pm with an 8 second shutter delay and no flash:

great job, but you can just order LED bulbs from www.autolumination.com and put them into the E46 M3 US Spec bootlid light sockets.

there are no light out errors w/license plate lights.

You sure can, but the incandescent-based light housings are not designed for the light pattern festoon LED bulbs produce; therefore, the light output is more like a beam. If you look closely at the OEM LED light fixture, the lens is frosted/opaque and the LED's are mounted at an angle so the light output spreads evenly across the license plate. :thumbsup2:

Nice dude... I know exactly what you mean about the mean... how the light isn't spread evenly.

I didn't know it was in the lens!! I'm gonna do this mod now for sure!! (Any no more stupid LED festoons burning out!!)

btw... awesome license plate... lol b4 I got my custom plate... I had "5RUG216"... Oo off topic but my friend's neighbor has "5RUG555" on his explorer... and I caught some criminals one time making a getaway in a Camry with plate "5RUG288"

5RUG plates ftw!

me too! :) The thing i like about these the most is that they will work like OEM on and off as soon as the cars are off. My LED bulbs right now stay on for a few mins after i lock the car. I dont mind this but still OEM is better than anything else :)

You can get them from pelicanparts or tischer, but the price at my dealer was about the same with tax versus the shipping/handling that you'd need to pay to buy them online, and the dealers will usually have the lights there in 2 days (they tend to always have the connectors in stock).

Correct. If you don't want to crimp your own wire to the connectors, just buy 61130005197 and don't buy 61131383776.

No, these will not fit on the OEM stock bootlid - unless you are able to modify it somehow. someone on e46fanatics did it, but it didn't sit flush (2-way tape was used)

I just want to say that I really like this mod. I finally got around to installing these last night. I find them to be much brighter than the led bulbs I had in the halogen housing. Plus, there are no bulb out warnings on the dash at all. Very worthwhile mod, thanks for the DIY:thumbsup2:

I'm from the UK and have a stock CSL trunk (bootlid lol) and also want to take advantage of this mod as i dont think many people have done this over here in UK..Does any 1 know the exact part numbers i will need to order in the UK?

I will need part numbers for everything and the bulbs aswell as in my stock trunk i had (non csl) i ordered LED's from Ebay which stopped working after 2 days.

If I'm not mistaken, all BMW part numbers are global. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Otherwise, all the part numbers I listed are all you need to add the OEM LED license plate lights to your CSL bootlid.

As for your non-CSL bootlid, you simply need (2) 6418 (festoon) bulbs which you should be able to pickup at your local automotive parts store.

Can't you get these lights off eBay for about $10 a pair?

You can buy LED festoon bulbs from ebay or any of the websites that sell LED bulbs, sure. But there are advantages with the OEM LED setup:

1. the generic LED festoon bulbs do no last
2. the light pattern that the generic LED festoon bulbs produce when used on the OEM incandescent license plate light housing isn't ideal. With the OEM setup, you can see that the lens is somewhat frosted/translucent and the LED's are specifically angled. This produces a diffusesed white light pattern against the license plate, instead of a spotlight-like pattern.

If you don't care about that stuff and only care about having the white light, then yeah, the ebay bulbs will do the job.

Thanks for the write-up. I can't wait to do this. I have a custom setup (non-festoon bulb), but one of the LED clusters flickers occasionally, even though my wiring is done correctly.

One question though, do the LED lights stay on dim when the car is on, even with the lights off? I know that with aftermarket LEDs this is the case.

When you push with a screwdriver toward the long side of the light, does it move? If it does, you're doing it right. You just need to push to the side first, then pry out and away from the trunk.

more or less. If you don't make your own wires, you will still need to buy the little aqau-colored connector you see in pic 8, as well as 2 pairs of wires that will plug into that connector.

To the best of my knowledge, you cannot buy the connectos with wires already attached to it.

Not unless youre buying them from someone that cut them out of a car. You can buy them new with the prongs & just attach your wires.

Great DIY!

Just waiting on my VCSL boot from them and should be doing this very soon. I ran across another DIY where the member ran four of those cables (2 from each registration light) which he fabricated himself by combining the male and females in pairs and soldering them. This seems a heck of alot simpler.
http://www.fastm.com/m3/carbonfiber/bootlid_18.jpg

However this does involve splicing the OEM connector to expose those three wires or are they bare like that when you remove the OEM lights?

Got_S54?
Wed, Nov-24-2010, 05:32:39 PM
What the other member did and what I explained are no different. The connector in my pic with the 3 wires was cut off from the license plate lights of the original bootlid. If you don't want to cut that, you'll then need to buy that connector as well so you can connect the new lights to the cars' wiring harness.

But yes, you basically need to make 2 pairs of wires (one for each light) that will end up connecting to the single pair of positive and negative wires on the harness.

DiXiS 18
Wed, Nov-24-2010, 05:39:21 PM
you need to splice them.

Fri, Nov-26-2010, 06:45:42 PM
Do those wire connectors clip into that blue universal connector? Cuz I test fitted it into the light first and the connector wouldn't stay in. Now I gotta go home and try to pry that connector out of the light haha

Comes with two LED housings, two connectors with two wires in each (4 total).

brand new? everything needed for complete installation?

All I did is change the connectors on my wires and plugged them in (I did have the OEM CSL bootlid wiring in place so that might be different) but if you already have an CSL bootlid on your car that uses E39 license plate lights there is a high chance that just changing the connectors and plugging the new lights in will work.

Just thought I would say that as its less work.

Does anyone know where I can get the crimper just like the one the OP has? :please: I have looked high and low and have not been able to find anything except some cheap chinese chrimpers that do not crimp like this but just fold over the connector wire holder making it look like crap

Where can I get this adapter, or what is the P/N of it? (The one with the 3 bare wires coming out of it.)
The one on my OEM trunk goes directly into the bumper handle. and I dont want to cut it off for whoever I sell my OEM trunk to.

Personally, I like to solder connections, but you can use butt connectors, crimp connectors etc to connect the wires together:
http://www.jmadventures.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/10.jpg

Heat shrink shrunk. Note I used some heat shrink as well on the unused wire.
http://www.jmadventures.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/11.jpg

I put some electrical tape over all the heatshrink and made a bundle:
http://www.jmadventures.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/12.jpg

Turn on your lights and test:
http://www.jmadventures.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/13.jpg

Clip the lights onto the trunk:
http://www.jmadventures.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/14.jpg

Finished pic. They look really clean:
http://www.jmadventures.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/15.jpg

OEM looks, fitment and quality. No more yellowish lights:
http://www.jmadventures.com/share/pics/cars/m3/diy/ledlicense/16.jpg

Fun pic. I started playing with the exposure settings on the point and shoot cannon. This pic was taken at 11pm with an 8 second shutter delay and no flash:

Does anybody know where I can find this connector and the internal pins? I just installed an OEM CSL Bootlid and want to keep the OEM wiring.

I know Tischer sells the entire trunk lid grip which includes this connector (51137170967). However, I'm just interested in the connector.

OK, I have the filament style oem CSL bootlid LP lamps now. I replaced right one with a backup camera that has a small LED for the light and now the two rears on the plate don't match color. So to do this E9x oem LED I still need to replace the whole housing (pn 63 26 7 193 293) that has the incorporated leds built in correct? Or is there another way to get the led color to match? I prefer it not so bright that's a reason I didn't do when I first bought my CSL trunk but now need it to match. There is not a smaller LED unit to retrofit into my oem E46 license plate light housing is there from bmw?

I'm not sure what type of bulb goes in the CSL housing but how about something like this?

^thank you
but the oem E9x LED are only $13 a side and that bulb is $12
so i'll probably go oem and diffuse part of it so it's not so bright :clueless:

Bumperoo ---

I have an OEM CSL boot that the PO put the standard E46 trunk lights back into. Of course, they do not fit perfectly (a little epoxy holding them in) so I want to replace them with proper fitting housings and OEM LED bulbs - a la E90 (not super bright like Rdash).

I thought I only needed to order the housing and the bulbs themselves, but it seems like I also need to do the wiring described here? That totally freaks me out. I am a noob with electrical stuff. Also confused with the different options and which PNs I should order to make this as easy as possible. Any clarification/help? TIA!

At minimum, here's what you'll need
2 BMW LED registration lights (# 63 26 7 193 293) $15/each
2 BMW Universal Socket aka plug connector (# 61 13 6 925 634) $1.40 each
4 Bushing Contacs with wire (# 61 13 0 005 197) $1.28 each

If you don't want to cut/splice the OEM connector in the trunk which goes to your existing license plate lights, then you'll need these additional parts as Alachua posted above:
1 Connector: 61 13 6 931 929
2 pins (with wiring): 61 13 0 006 664

With everything listed above, you'll be able to build a wire harness that will be plug and play to the OEM license plate light connector. You'll still need to solder or use buttconnectors to make the harness, but that's really super easy to do.

I'm in NorCal. If you mail me your stuff with a return postage paid envelope, I'll build it for you (solder and heatshrink) and mail it back ready to plug and play. But seriously, you should be able to do this yourself. Email me if you have any questions. Good luck :thumbsup2:

Thank you so much! I will order the parts and see what I can do. Glad to have that ship-to-you option available as a backup, very kind of you.

Stupid Q, that list above does not include the actual LED bulbs, correct? I see the first PN listed as the housing, but everything else looks like wiring.

No, it does. The housing has the LED bulbs built in. It's a one piece design.

^ Awesome!

Does this look right? Some of the descriptions and titles don't match exactly so just confirming since these parts are foreign to me.

Wow, the price for the 3-pin connectors are ridiculous - considering you only need one. $21.19?? serious rapeage.

If you want to avoid throwing money away, skip buying the parts ending in 664 and 929. Just splice into the oem wire and call it a day. Otherwise, see if the dealer will sell you just 1 connector instead of being forced to buy a 10-pack. :goodluck:

What type of license plate lights does that bootlid use? If it uses the e39 series style lights (which is also what's used on the OEM CSL bootlid), then this mod will work because the e9x style lights have the same shape housing. The only difference is that they are LED bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs which is what the e39 license plate lights use.

Sorry for the late post lol but the bootlid is going on a e46 m3. I basically want to know if this mod will be necessary for my new bootlid ( buy new 20 & 22 wires, parts, connectors, etc..)or can i just transfer the oem license plate wires and just replace the oem registration lights with LED ones?

There are 2 styles of csl bootlids. One style which is a true replica of the real csl bootlid which uses e39 license plate lights. Thats the style vorstiner makes. With that style, you cannot use the oem m3 license plate lights because they're a different shape.

There's another csl style bootlid (hybrid style) that uses the oem license plate bar across the back. If thats the style you bought, then you can use your oem license plate bulb holders and just buy generic LED bulbs to replace the incandescent OEM ones.

Oem CSL style:
