View Full Version : Questions on my new M3 Convertible?
01M3ConvSilver Fri, Nov-09-2001, 06:16:00 PM Guys, 1 week ago last Friday, I blew up my 94 Mustang Cobra - supercharged, 518 rwhp. I walked into the BMW dealer next to my work - Canoga Park, California (Bob Smith BMW) and they had a loaded, silver, 2001 M3 on the show room floor. He gave me $500 off sticker and Within an hour, I had purchased it, and I really love it. My wife and kids adhore it, I never knew how much they hated my Mustang until I came home with this. My wife does not even care about the money I spent. She said it was worth it. No more wrenching for me.
Anyway sorry for the long post, but, I have a few questions:
1. I have 500 miles on the car. Can I jump on it now? I am itching to rev. the thing and hear what it sounds like.
2. The subwoofers on the Upgraded stereo seem to be hidden somewhere behind the seats in the trunk. Are they tube subwoofers? Do they have their own amp? I would like to turn up the gain on the subwoofers, does anyone know how?
3. Tire rotation - since the front and back are different sizes, can you rotate the front tires right to left? and the rear tires right to left?
4. I heard that there is a good repellent that I should put on the canvas top that is sold at Marine stores. Do you guys have any recommendations regarding treatment of the canvas top.
Thanks in advance for any help.
PS. Right now it is 82 degress in LA and I am really enjoying the convertible.
muf Fri, Nov-09-2001, 08:41:00 PM Hey congrats on picking up a nice car hehehe.
1. DO NOT jump on the car yet. You must wait till till the 1200-1400 mile (cant remember) service is up, then gradually get on it. Dont take over 5500 rpm's.
2. I dont kno what teh subs are but im sure you cant turn the gain up at all, nor would you prolly want to.
3.Yes I would say np rotating the tires right to left etc.
4.No Clue about top protection. I would ask the bmw garage, then get a hardtop. =)
Congrats on the awesome car.

scout308 Sat, Nov-10-2001, 02:45:00 PM in regards to rotating the tires left to right...aren't the tires uni-directional?
Wouldn't that make the tread going the wrong way?
NickyBlack Sat, Nov-10-2001, 05:45:00 PM unless you physically take the tire off the rim and mount it on the opposite side the right way, in the right direction, the answere is ,no. you cant rotate these tires
silvere46m3 Sun, Nov-11-2001, 05:37:00 AM sup "01M3convsilver", i read your post and i wanted to let you know what i did and answer some of your questions:
1. Dont jump on it just yet, i know how it feels, yes it is very tempting. take it easy for now so it can break-in, to 1500 miles. i didnt rev over 5000 rpm until 2000 something miles but i touch the 5000 mark a couple of times.
2. the subs are located in the truck just under the rear window, its a black box, that is your hk upgrade subs.
3.yes and no, it depends, if your tires are directional, then you cant(very bad idea), if they are not directional, then you can, from right to left. the directional tires are one way direction rotating tire, if you put it backwards, then it will be a gurantee bad things will happen.
my uncle wreacked his 1999 m3 due to putting the spare tire the wrong direction, and drove it in the rain, and hit the guard rail at 35mph on the freeway.(ruin the car)
4. on this question i cant help you as much, but all i know it that dont keep the top in the heat two much. but in la, it maybe fine, and keep it under the garage on it as possible. hardtop is a option too.
i hope this helps, i also changed my oil around 3500 to 4000 miles because it looked dark to me. Enjoy the have fun with the ultimate driving machine.(i know you will)

stevencldr Sun, Nov-11-2001, 06:22:00 AM If i were you, i would jump on it once in a while. This helps open the engie up a little more and prevents it from getting "lazy" characteristics. Dont do it often obviously, but its not going to do any harm. I heard these engines are pre run at the factory a little, because they are so highly tuned and BMW tries to prevent any problematic engines from being installed into the cars. Also, they know that not everyone is going to stay bellow 5000 rpm all the time in the first 1200 miles.
I jumped on it a few times during the break in period (4 or 5 times) and my engine runs perfectly.

Rob's Archive Wed, Nov-03-2004, 01:06:05 PM 1200 miles no greater than 5500 rpm and 105 mph..at that time you will need to schedule a 1200 mile service where the dealer will perform a few items. FOLLOW IT!
The cabs have the sub in a small enclosure behind the seats that is accessible from the trunk...its a pos free air 8" that needs to be yanked cause its crap and it rattles like no other.
you cant rotate your tires so make sure you watch your tire pressures.
BMW offeres a good *but expensive* convertable top weather proofer that helps to repell water. Use just water every other time when cleaning the top and the other times you can use soap and water. The proofer is supposed to be used every 5 times or so you wash the top but that shiz gets to expensive....
jms Wed, Nov-03-2004, 01:09:58 PM your original post says it's a 2001??? is that right or a typo? that will answer your "jump on it" question unless the engine's been rebuilt.
acitydweller Wed, Nov-03-2004, 01:37:34 PM yeah, its a 2001 and you have 500 miles on it?
begone Wed, Nov-03-2004, 02:00:31 PM Haha, you've been had. Its and old thread someone dug up. How awesome would it be to find a 2001 with 500 miles on it in 2004?!
