Just returned from the dealer where the factory regional tech drove my '01 M3 6 spd.Agreed it was "somewhat notchy" especially 2nd gear and "perhaps" would improve over time (yeah right).Said all the E46's are somewhat notchy.Essentially= T.S. Baby!!!!!!

at least you didn't get the reply, "it's within specs". good luck with it....let us know what happens. hopefully some hard driving will solve it.

I've experienced the same. The gearbox is a bit notchy 1 to 2 and then to 3. The dealer thinks it is very normal. Have to live with it.

Thanks guys.
It blows my mind that when you read reviews of the 6 spd gearbox in the E46 the authors say "smooth shifter" or other positive statements.I really believe the mags are afraid to criticize-too much ad $ involved.

Actually when I test drove one, my criticism was the gear box was way too smooth. I didnt notice notchyness as all.

has anyone here driven a M5? i wonder if m5 gears are notchy. don't the two share same transmission? but personally, i don't want my gears to be too smooth or notchy.

same here guys, i have a notchy feeling in my m3, but if they say it is normal than we cant do anything about it, if it breakes or something, it will be under warranty still.
