help......I am currently looking at purchase a 1986 m3 baur TC.
Imported from germany. It has m3 badges but does not have wider fenders. VIN number WBAAB310001770477. It is registered as m3. What are some clues to look for to verify if it is authentic ??. It also has 6 cyl and not a 4cyl. Were they only produced with 4 cyl.???
thanks

Sorry I can't help with the ID'ing the car, but I can help with the engine specs. I believe that early models had a 4 cyl, 2.3L that had 192hp. They later came out with the M3 evo that had a 2.5L 4 cyl. Early evos had 220 horse, later ones had about 240 horses.

BMW TIS reports it manufactured as a 1986 E30 325i salon with an M20 engine.

All e30 M3's were 4 cylinder. Very expensive motors to repair.
The 6 cylinder S50 Mpower motor does fit the e30 engine bay and makes life really exciting. Check out Alex Henry's pics.
It is easy to spot real S14 & S50 M3 engines by the statement Mpower in big friendly letters on the cam cover. The other dominant feature is the bold, individual tubes to the induction manifold.
e30 M3's only came in coupe and full convertible, all LHD. A Baur cabrio M3 is highly unlikely.

TIS describes this VIN (0842954) as invalid... not sure why...
Good luck,

Wasn't even aware that there was an 86 M3... I was under the impression the first e30 was in 87.
