View Full Version : Anyone have numbers on roof?
Ersin Wed, Mar-12-2008, 05:46:50 PM How much different will the Carbon Fiber roof really make. Who knows how much weight it saves and how much lower the CG is over the steel top, or even over the sunroof?
Of course, there is no denying that it looks hawt. But really, does it make so much of a difference that it is noticeable?
DCLeopard91 Wed, Mar-12-2008, 06:00:06 PM Noticeable? Not really, unless you couple it with a LOT of other mods and are a racecar driver or something. The weight savings is 11lbs. The amount of change in the center of gravity is very small, but I don't know the exact delta in height...I don't know if BMW would release that info.

Is that 11lbs over the steel roof? It's certainly a savings of 50+ lbs over the sunroof :thumbsup2:
I think the difference was something to that effect with the ///M3 CSL :rulaiz:

Just for reference, IIRC the sunroof on the E46 M3 added something like 25 or 26 pounds. This is regular M3, not the CSL. But that would mean that the CSL CF roof was about 25 or so pounds lighter than the regular M3. They also used a number of other weight savings like a cardboard trunk floor. Yes, I said "cardboard" not "carbon fiber".

CF roof is 11 pounds lighter than steel roof and 40 something pounds lighter than sunroof steel roof.

correct. It's in the BMW M3 brochure.
I ordered the sedan with no sunroof.

It's your money and by all means you should get what you want. But, I can't help but ask why you ordered the sedan without the sunroof. The M3 sedan, or coupe for that matter, is really not a track car, and not a sports car. It is a very nice sports sedan. Why be concerned about the 40 pounds on a car that weighs about 3600?

Hmmm, you might be able to notice that 40 pounds difference between CF and sunroof.
salvador_sotelo Wed, Mar-12-2008, 08:02:38 PM If you lower the gravity center you'd only notice it on the
bends. The car will have more grip since it's running "lower". Extreme case: a go-kart whose center
of gravity is so low that it will be so stable when cornering
and therefore handling more G's.

Yes, this is an extreme case. We're talking at most 40 lbs for a 3700 lb car. I can't see how this makes much of a difference in the height of the CG, and not sure that it will even be measured, much less noticed.
I guess with my big butt being lower than my smaller upper body I should have an advantage over an average driver? :lolhit:
Porshapwr Wed, Mar-12-2008, 08:41:30 PM I'll be getting the carbon roof and I had no sunroof on both of my E46s.
Taking 40lbs off is a good step. Combine it with some other mods like lightweight exhaust, lightweight battery, carbon intake, etc... and you can drop like 125-150lbs. Trust me it makes a big difference in the feel of the car.
Blown_m3 Wed, Mar-12-2008, 10:31:22 PM I have v-cf roof wih a sunroof. I should be under 35-40 lbs over steel roof. Mostly bragging rights I suppose. Not really worth it unless you use it for show.
