View Full Version : How does SMG II skip gears when decelerating...?
Tue, Oct-16-2001, 12:20:00 AM
How do you shift from 6th gear to 2nd gear with SMGII without having to downshift thru the sequence...? Do you just click real fast...? That's what I have to do with steptronic in my X5 and it's not impressive because often I don;t agree with the computer...
I am not an experienced driver, but I encounter this sometimes when decelerating as I approach a turn after a long straight away...If this is a stupid question, have mercy...(my first post)

A friend who has smg said you have to click it down. But the more i think, its prolly not bad.......just click click real fast from 5th and ur in third.

I'm new here, so please be kind since this question is probably answered somewhere.
When you press a lever in does this is disengage the engine? So that if I wanted to put the car in neutral while driving I could just press a lever in?

Heya, welcome......I believe to put the car in neutral you pull both paddles back at the same time. Someone correct me if im wrong.

Why thank you for the warm greeting!
The reason I ask is that I like to coast down hills and to a red light if I have no one behind me. I'll guess what gear I'll need when it's time to accelerate, place the car in that gear and push the clutch in and just roll. When it's time to get moving it's just a simple release of the clutch if I guessed correctly.
Kind of strange I know, but I like to save fuel where I can and also play this crazy game.
I sure wish I could test drive both cars to see what I prefer. This is a very tough choice.

Well, for what its worth. I test drove a 6-speed and found it to be way too sloppy.
Its too easy to shift like gravy and I was unsure what gear I was going in. Course that can be easliy changed. I decided to go with the SMG though, Iv heard nothing but great things...figured id just take the chance, noone has said anything bad yet so...
Good luck in whatever you choose....either way you cannot go wrong.

Well, I should get some feedback from a good source soon regarding SMG II vs. 6speed....My dad works for BMWNA in the Southeast. He said when an SMG II and 6speed come available, he'll try to get both cars out on the track late this fall and let me know his impressions on the SMG II...He's a corporate guy, not very technical, so I'll try to give him some specific things to test for us.....
