View Full Version : Sport Button in E46 M3, What does it do?
M3_Dust Wed, Jul-26-2006, 08:45:15 PM the question seems to come up quite frequently, and the responses are often varied and erroneous.
1. does the sport button change the engine map?
No, it only changes the responsiveness of the electronic throttles, so that less input with your foot on the accelerator pedal yields more output from the throttles than when in normal mode.
2. does it add power when the sport button is pressed?
No, although the car seems to feel invigorated, again you are only getting more fuel into the engine with less effort from your foot.
3. my gas mileage seems lower when i drive in sport mode?
Yes, yes it does. :shiftdriv
actual mileage may vary, it is likely that you will comsume fuel at a faster rate with sport mode on.
Refer to the following chart showing the effects of engaging sport mode and the differences in throttle output in each mode:

feel free to add.

the post you quoted is a question related to one of the shift modes on SMGII, your car is 6MT so you don't need to worry about it.
03 dash M3 Mon, Nov-12-2007, 12:58:04 PM Not a huge fan of the Sport Button at all. The car is just too sensitive with it on.
I was watching a show on this super super rich guy that was buying an F1 F-200X Ferrari... they were talking about how the cars were set up differently for MS and RB. Apparently MS liked a longer throw on the throttle and RB liked a more sensitive shorter throw... Based on this, I think if both drove M3s, MS would leave the sport button off and RB would turn it on.
M3_Dust... that chart is awesome. I was thinking about hacking together a graph for the comparison, but that works quite well. Thanks for posting.

This happened to me to, but i realized that it was me instead of the car. if you have sport mode engaged, the car seems more sensitive. as you push the pedal down, it jerks your foot back and forth.the car is o sensitive that it puts throttle on every time you accidentally depress the accelerator in the process..just push down on the accelerator easily, and it wont happen.

Woodson Tue, Jun-17-2008, 05:07:59 PM Is there a way to have this defaulted to on?
wgp_hoppa Wed, Jun-18-2008, 12:22:32 AM ive had my car for a yr and have only pressed the sport button twice.
samM376' Tue, Jul-22-2008, 04:55:45 PM If you use software such as a Shark injector you can have Sport Mode on all the time
You can even customize DSC off as Sport on among other things to make one button press as standard to turning all sporty driving systems on
Sport mode becomes a little more user friendly with software, otherwise just mash the pedal and you'll get the same affect

beeotch Thu, Jul-31-2008, 11:39:17 AM so if 2 M3's run from a dig, one with sport button on and the other with sport button off, equal drivers, they would be dead even?
Woodson Thu, Jul-31-2008, 02:12:45 PM Yes, they would.

In a 6spd, does the initial write up hold true? Thanks!
Tp.Igrok Sat, Jan-10-2009, 07:01:53 AM if the car on the dyno, whould it make any difference with the sport button off/on?
Tonester Sat, Jan-10-2009, 10:37:33 AM if the car on the dyno, whould it make any difference with the sport button off/on?
No difference.. it just changes throttle percentage vs. pedal percentage...
I.E. - 10% pedal = 25% @ throttles
I hate sport mode... I wish there was a software company that doesn't change pedal sensitivity, I have yet to find one.. so I'm still on stock software.

I'm exactly the opposite. I wish Sport mode would just stay on, I like having that quick instant throttle. Why a sports car has a button that says sport on it though beats me:clueless:

radha Sat, Aug-08-2009, 07:57:56 AM OnebadM5 - Just a minor correction unless there is a misunderstanding but the SPORT button the E46 M3 does not do anything with the steering like stiffen it up or change ratios. That only happens on the M5. BMW also calls this Servotronic. The M Driving Dynamics Control is also new to me but I'm sure its somewhere in text.
"Sport" mode actually first came out when drive by wire was introduced on the old 750iL. There wasnt a SPORT button but if you put the automatic shift lever into 4th gear, the DME will automatically go into sport mode thus stiffen up the steering feel. This was also give more throttle progression just like what the E46 M3s and E39 M5s are doing today.

Ashtechsmith Fri, Jun-15-2012, 06:33:19 PM Actually the button sharpens the trottle response, it does go the same with the throttle on the flood boards, if you read in the handbook it says it also cuts the power back by around a third when not on full throttle and also dulls the feel of the throttle.
alicia709 Mon, Nov-26-2012, 12:14:54 PM it add power when the sport button is pressed?
kwipp Mon, Nov-26-2012, 04:10:51 PM yes about 100hp
username11 Tue, Nov-27-2012, 08:19:32 PM From the E46 technical press release:
As on the M5, M Driving Dynamics Control provides Normal and Sport settings for throttle response. In the Sport setting, selected via a console switch, the ratio of throttle opening to pedal movement is increased so that apparent engine response is even quicker. Remarkably, even the transitional response of the electronic engine controls (primarily ignition timing) is altered to suit.
