View Full Version : M3 on "The Dragon" (Deal's Gap), Smokie Mountains
jeffreys48 Thu, Mar-16-2006, 04:30:04 PM http://www.tailofthedragon.com/maps_dragon_road.html
Anyone drive their M3 on this wonderful road? A lot of motorcycles do it. Its not too fast but it does have 318 curves in 11 miles. Lots of truckers on it too. Probably not a fast road but a challenging one.
Was thinking of driving it this summer. Anyone do it.

If I am not mistaken, one of the members on this board, Ced, has done this run. In fact, I think he has a video of it.
What say you, Ced?
jeffreys48 Thu, Mar-16-2006, 04:46:56 PM Follow the links. There are some sick photos of superbikes running into big rigs, cars running off roads, etc.
Its in the great smokie mountains in Tenn. in the USA. I have always wanted to drive it and also wanted to try a different thread out (as opposed to Which BBK to buy, which pully "gives" more power, etc.).
M3CJC Thu, Mar-16-2006, 04:56:59 PM Looks like an equally fun/dangerous road to me. I dont understand why they don't ban trucks from that road.
jeffreys48 Thu, Mar-16-2006, 05:07:23 PM There are no highways there. It has a lot of mountains and you can't put a major highway through a natural park. So, they keep it that way. Some interesting photos of trucks flipped over, jacknifed, etc.
Kendrick07 Thu, Mar-16-2006, 05:41:41 PM someone make one for nor cal!
fmk Thu, Mar-16-2006, 05:45:32 PM deals gap aka blood mountain
sleeks Thu, Mar-16-2006, 05:53:09 PM Looks like it would be a fun drive if it weren't for the trucks. Pretty dangerous. I would hate to be on a motorcycle.
jeffreys48 Thu, Mar-16-2006, 06:10:01 PM Here are some amusing photos:

It's highway 129 which runs on the southwest border of the Smokey Mountain National Park.

Yes. Fun road. You will be in aw once you see the road. The road can be intimidating though at speed. Beautiful road!!! Check out www.killboy.com
jtpassat Thu, Mar-16-2006, 06:42:14 PM s2000 owners have an organized run on the dragon every year.

Hey man, not my site, but I know the guy who takes the pics. He basically takes pics of every car that goes through the Dragron, click on the link where the photos are located and you will see who all have been there throughout the week.
deilenberger Thu, Mar-16-2006, 08:33:50 PM IMHO - Over-rated.
Not a great road since there are too many maniacs on sport bikes on it, and too many dudes on Harleys wobbling through it. Add in the trucks that frequently take up both lanes on curves and it becomes non-fun.
BTDT by bike.. and found a much NICER road not far from it..
See: http://www.tailofthedragon.com/cherohala.html
Wonderful road - and not a death trap like Deals Gap.
Worth the trip - but take along your radar detector.. the LEO's in the area pretty much support themselves off Yankee boys coming down to play on their pretty roads.
Fast Shadow Thu, Mar-16-2006, 08:37:10 PM It's an assclown convention, honestly.
motogp Thu, Mar-16-2006, 08:38:32 PM I thought it was worth it, very intense 11 miles, mind you this is on a sportbike, I don't think it would be as fun in a 4-wheeler. The Cherahola highway is a great drive/ride, its not near as tight and would give the ///M some room to stretch her legs. Look forward to going back.

It's the best road in the US. Since, it is very popular a weekday is the best time to drive it though. I have videos with little to no traffic throughout the 318 turns; one word. AWESOME.
Here's an old video, I did..not the most recent video though...

jeffreys48 Thu, Mar-16-2006, 09:50:26 PM nice video. too bad in low-res but I guess they have to make money some other way.
Thanks for that. It was like being there. Was that on your current Dinan car?

Yeah, that's it. You got PM.
grmnrkt Fri, Mar-17-2006, 04:51:18 PM Last month, this month, or next months issue of Automobile mag has a best 20 cars/roads anniversary issue. You know how mags can run a couple of months ahead. I have been reading them at the gym but don't care which month it is. This threads road may be one of the roads listed I can't remember. But Tenn., Cali, Arkansas,Ohio, and some other states made the list plus some roads in Europe and Canada. No pics but it tells you where to go and how long the stretches are if you like scenary and twisties. Good read. Pick it up.
I am in NE ohio but plan to make it down to the road listed down my Marietta, OH as soon as the weather breaks!
Happy motoring,
Brian

a.vixen Sat, Mar-25-2006, 03:03:59 PM Tail of the dragon is awesome! I've driven it both w/my old M and my new MINI (gasp). Much more fun in the MINI. Anyway, if ya have the chance, it's a must do. But night time on weekdays are better, less traffic. There are locals tho that dump oil in the road because of the maniac sport bikes.
There's a MINI meet down there 3 times a year, so if you go, be aware that you may not be alone. Altho you will make some good driving friends!

We did a week vacation there (SMNP) and all the roads in and around the park area are fantastic driving. Some of them can be quite intimidating with sheer walls on one side of you and steep drops on the other side. Plus we where there right after the major hurricane came through in 2004 so the roads where literally falling off the sides of the mountains. I wish I had pictures...great driving anyway - we stayed off of Highway 64 on the south side of the park and all the roads we drove on appear similar to this one - minus all the maniac trucks.
BTW - the absolute most maniac truck driving happens on Centerline Road on St John USVI. If you stay there, don't drive on this road. Cracked up Islanders driving cement trucks try to pull some "DUEL" action on tourists. We almost didn't make it to a shoulder/pullout in time.
